The 67th Kohima Village Sports Association (KVSA) Meet 2026 commenced on January 10 at Khuochiezie under the theme “Kevimerü”, with the Great Indian Barbet unveiled as the official mascot.
Chief host and advisor for School Education, Kekhrielhoulie Yhome, in his address, highlighted the evolving nature of the KVSA Meet, describing it as a platform where residents unite in harmony, setting aside differences. He emphasized the importance of maintaining a proper tally of the village population and encouraged youth to adopt healthy lifestyles through regular exercise and balanced diets. Stressing the potential of sports as a livelihood, he urged participants to remain humble and work hard.
Delivering the welcome address, Kohima Village Council (KVC) chairman Helievio Solo recalled the formation of the KVSA in 1944 at Thevokemouzie, noting Kohima Village’s 709-year history. He said the sports meet was envisioned to promote harmony and unity through sports.
The programme began with a ceremonial run by veterans. Earlier, the ceremonial torch was lit at Thevokemouzie and carried by sportspersons to Khuochiezie. The prelude programme was led by KVYO vice president Mhasimhalie Mathew Yhome, followed by an invocation prayer by pastor of CRC Kohima Village Rev. Vichülie Kelio. KVYO president Er. Medozhazo Rutsa delivered the presidential address, while Kohima Village Head GB Medo-o Keretsü, pronounced the traditional blessings.
The inaugural ceremony featured a march-past of contingents, lighting of the LXVII cauldron, rendition of the KVSA theme song, hoisting of the Khel flag, veterans’ relay and oath-taking ceremony.
