Nagaland Governor K. Sankaranarayanan Friday said Nagaland was a true gem in the Indian Union and that the State with its distinct culture, customs and traditions had been a unique feature in the cultural canvass of the Nation.
Addressing the Governor’s Award giving ceremony for distinction in the fields of Art, Music and Literature to five Naga personalities at Durbar Hall, Raj Bhavan, Kohima, Sankaranarayanan said
the Award was a “novel initiative” and had truly motivated artistes, musicians and writers to a great extent.
The five recipients of this year’s Governor’s Award are Seyiekielie Tepa (Art), Nungshirenba (Art), Khyochano TCK Ngully (Music), Kekhrievoü Yhome (Literature) and Dr. D. Kuolie (Literature).
He congratulated all the winners and hoped that they would continue to be role models for the youth and upcoming artistes and musicians.
“As we face cultural onslaught from technology, in particular Television and Internet, we have to think as to what can be done to preserve our rich cultural heritage and traditions,” Sankaranarayanan said and added art and art forms in their present forms should take advantage of technology to reach out to more people.
The Governor also stressed on the need to introduce painting exhibitions, book reading clubs and music societies in the State.
Chief minister Neiphiu Rio, who also addressed the function, said that for a long time Nagas have been engulfed in the gun culture and not taught about the better side of life.
Rio however said there have been positive changes over the years and expressed hoped that the talented ones get more encouragement and continue to pursue to excel in their respective fields.
The chief minister also assured that DAN Government would continue to support the people, especially the younger generation, in order to make them more equipped to face the outside world.
Earlier in the programme, a brief outline of the Governor’s Award for distinction in the fields of Art, Music and Literature was given by Commissioner & Secretary, Art & Culture, Khekiye Sema.
The Governor’s Award for distinction consists of a certificate, memento, shawl and cash award of Rs, 25,000. Additional chief secretary, Lalthara, proposed vote of thanks.
