A three-day ‘Hornbill Bamboo Carnival 2024’ was inaugurated by advisor to chief minister and Investment & Development Authority of Nagaland (IDAN) chairman Abu Metha as special guest at Nagaland Bamboo Resource Centre, 6th Mile, Sovima under Chümoukedima district on Thursday. The carnival is being been organized by Nagaland Bamboo Development Agency (NBDA).
Speaking at the inaugural programme, Abu Metha lauded the Nagaland Bamboo Development Agency (NBDA) for its innovative approach in organising the Bamboo Carnival, a key component of the Hornbill festival.
Describing bamboo as “green gold”, Metha emphasized its historical and economic importance to the Naga way of life. He said that NBDA’s initiatives have empowered numerous stakeholders in the bamboo industry, making it a vital contributor to the state’s economy.
At the programme, NBDA team member Dr. Tolto Metha gave a note on Hornbill Bamboo Carnival. He highlighted how the Bamboo Carnival has evolved from a humble beginning into a key platform for entrepreneurship across diverse sectors, including bamboo, music, arts, and the food industry.
Over 200 entrepreneurs are participating in this year’s carnival. Dr. Tolto Metha said that the cross-sectoral approach of NBDA has drawn expertise from multiple departments to strengthen the bamboo industry in Nagaland.
He said the carnival not only showcased bamboo’s versatility but also united people from various walks of life to recognize its potential as a medium for sustainable livelihood and economic growth, he added.
Earlier, Rev. Zhau Sanchu offered invocation while NBDA mission director Albert Ezung delivered welcome address. Special song was presented by Akokla Langu and traditional Kuki bamboo dance was presented by Bungsang Village Cultural Group. Later, vote of thanks was proposed by NBDA team member Er. Vedukho Rhakho.
The three-day event would also witness Music, art, culture, food and Bamboo workshop.
The informal programme followed launching of exhibition stalls by the special guest wherein 20 stalls were set up. The carnival also featured master bamboo craftsmen from Japan and an upcoming delegation from Taiwan to share expertise and foster future collaborations.
