Nagaland: Activities & programmes organised for students across the state

Various educational institutions and other organisations organised programmes and activities for students and faculty.


MCTE: One-day workshop on soft skills was organized at the Mokokchung College of Teacher Education (MCTE), Yimyu, Mokokchung, on September 20, in collaboration with Emporium Skill Training Institute, Nagaland. The event aimed at enhancing leadership and professionalism through soft skills development.


The workshop commenced with an introductory note by MCTE principal, Dr. T. Alemla Longkumer, who called attention to the importance of soft skills in both professional and personal interactions with others. She stressed that developing competent educators and giving them the resources, they need to have a positive impact on their students and colleagues are made possible by Soft Skills.

She extended her gratitude and appreciation to the Emporium team—Temjenkala Aier, CEO of Emporium Nagaland; Ayani Kikon, Soft Skills Trainer; and Allin Awomi, Operations Manager cum Aviation Trainer.


Ayani Kikon led the first session, focusing on strategies for building high-performing teams in the workplace. She introduced the concept of “Creating a Dream Team for a Sport,” emphasizing collaboration, appreciation, and teamwork.

The session was interactive, featuring collaborative development exercises and teamwork games. She also presented on ‘Professionalism and Workplace Conduct’, emphasizing the importance of clear agendas, maintaining interpersonal etiquette, respecting cellophane usage, and giving and receiving constructive criticism.

She also stressed the role of professionalism in building trust and maintaining confidentiality. The session was enhanced with an audio-visual presentation showcasing basic manners and interpersonal etiquette in professional settings.


CEO of Emporium Nagaland, Temjenkala Aier discussed her journey towards leadership, emphasizing the importance of Emotional Intelligence (EI) and social skills.

She emphasized the need for understanding one’s inner self, honesty, and emotional well-being. Aier cited Daniel Goleman’s work as a critical skill for leadership roles and encouraged future educators to set clear visions practice humility and inclusivity, and commit to lifelong learning.


Allin Awomi led the ‘Grooming Session’, discussing professional grooming in both theoretical and practical methods. She emphasized body language, politeness, and personal hygiene, and participants experienced expert techniques through a hands-on session.


MITE: Modern Institute of Teacher Education (MITE) red ribbon club conducted an HIV/AIDS awareness program on September 20, on the theme “Silence equals death: Speak out, get tested, save lives.”


Mobile Integrated Counseling and Testing Centre, Kohima, counselor Aosangla Imchen attended the programme, the resource person. Accompanying her were her team and Link Workers from Kripa Foundation. A press release from college principal, Dr. Kate Dandesh Kumar stated that Imchen enlightened the student and teachers about various modes of HIV/AIDS transmission and emphasized the importance of seeking timely treatment. She encouraged the gathering to break free from stigma and take a proactive stance in the fight against HIV/AIDS.


To further promote awareness, a slogan competition was organized. The prize money for the competition was sponsored by the Link Worker Scheme of Kripa Foundation.


Following the program, a free counseling and testing session for HIV/AIDS and Hepatitis B&C was conducted. A total of 63 student-teachers availed the service. The Red Ribbon Club of MITE is committed to raising awareness about HIV/AIDS and promoting preventive measures. Through such initiatives, the club aims to contribute to a healthier and more informed society.


Meanwhile, MITE also, celebrated International Peace Day on Saturday, which was organized by the institute’s Current Event and Ecological Clubs.
MITE vice principal, Dr. Gangte emphasized the importance of peace and encouraged the student teachers to embrace it in their personal and professional lives.

To promote understanding and critical thinking, the student teachers actively participated in various activities, including debates, dramas, and a met gala.


SJC (A): St. Joseph’s College (Autonomous), Jakhama, hosted its 15th Convergence Fest, on the theme “Unite, Innovate, Inspire.” on September 20. The event was organized by the Department of Business Administration at the college’s indoor stadium with participants from six colleges, two universities, and 12 departments of the host college.


Guest speaker, DGP Nagaland Rupin Sharma, urged students to follow their passion rather than societal expectations, sharing his own journey and emphasizing the need for exploration beyond state boundaries for better opportunities.


Lyaveio Alex Pao, convenor of the event, introduced the fest’s history, noting its growth since its inception in 2010 from a small gathering to a major inter-college festival.
Competitions at the fest included Mad Ads, Business Plan, Photography, Business Quiz, Mock Interviews, and Mr. & Miss Convergence. Special performances by Moko Koza, LC Sekhose, Khriebu Meyase, Azi Rudy, and the SJC Dance Club added to the excitement of the event.


SJU: Pol-Fiesta, organised by the Political Science Association (PSA) of the Department of Political Science, St. Joseph University, Chumoukedima was held on September 18 and 19.


The fest was held on the theme “Igniting Minds”, comprised of an ‘Inter-Institutions’ debate competition on “NLTP Act is the Shield Against the Fire of Alcohol” held on with eight Institutions taking part in the competition. St. Joseph College, Jakhama bagged as the First winner of the debate competition and Dimapur Government College bagged as the second winner. Guest of honour, CEO, Nune’s Construction, Nagaland Nunese Sale, in his speech, encouraged students to work hard and strive to succeed.


Dr. Achanger, HoD, Dept. of Political Science, St. Joseph University released the PSA’s Constitution. The second day session comprised of class competitions on various items in consonance with the fest theme. The objective of Pol-Fiesta was to encourage and enhance the talents of the students in the department.


Competitions on Acapella, solo Instrumental Piece, Movie Monologue, Political Leaders Mimicry, Dance battles, Treasure hunt, Paintings, and writings were held. These competitions encouraged students to participate and compete among Nine classes from the Department. The overall class champion was bagged by UG III Sem (A) under the supervision of Dr. Moameren, lifting the trophy with a cash prize.


RCD: Rotary Club of Dimapur (RCD) organized a speech competition on Saturday, at Pranab Jubilee Auditorium, Dimapur, in celebration of International Literacy Day. Students from various prominent schools participated, marking Rotary’s global observance of September as the literacy month.


A total of 20 students participated, divided into two groups-in Group A, the first prize was awarded to Hari Debnath, Class 10, from S.D. Jain School, while Olemnaro Aier, Class 9, from Living Stone International School secured the second rank. In Group B, Hilina Rashid from S.D. Jain School took first place, with Moarenba N. Kitchu, also from S.D. Jain School finishing in second place.


Rtn. S. P. Dutta, chairman of the program, extended his thanks to everyone involved in the event, with special recognition to the judges, Dr. Sanjukta Bhattacharjee, Ajit Singh,Vice Principal, Public College and Rosy Gogoi.


Loyola School: Indian Army organised an arts and science fair for the children of Zakhama Village on Saturday, at Loyola School, Zakhama in Kohima. 240 students from Loyola School and Campion School, Zakhama along with their parents participated in the event.

The students had the opportunity to interact with their peers and demonstrate their skills across various subjects to include physics, chemistry, biology, mathematics and fine arts.
General Manager, Nagaland State Transport, Dzuvichiito Khale was the chief guest for the event. He addressed the students and distributed prizes to top 10 projects. By providing opportunities for students to showcase their talent, the Indian Army inspires future leaders to pursue excellence.


Immanuel College: Immanuel College organised its annual Spiritual Awakening Gospel programme on the theme ‘Seek the Lord and Live. Amos 5:6’ with Rev. Dr. Azahto Sema, Senior Pastor, New Life Church, Kohima as the speaker on September 21, at the College Auditorium.


The speaker’s message draws on the importance of prioritizing faith and one’s relationship with God, citing Matthew 6:33, which emphasizes seeking God’s kingdom first. By sharing a life-changing testimony, he highlighted God’s grace and its transformative impact on individuals.

He also stressed that merely being born into a Christian family does not make someone a Christian unless one is born again through a personal relationship with God. The speaker encouraged students to receive God and live a Christian life, warning against procrastination, noting that it is not the will of God.


MGM college: MGM College, Dimapur, celebrated its 3rd Graduation Ceremony, on September 21, in the college auditorium with Former Director of Higher Education, C. Khalong Ao, as guest of honour.


C. Khalong Ao, while delivering an inspiring keynote address on the theme of “going the extra mile” shared motivational stories that encouraged the graduates to aim higher and pursue excellence.


Graduates were awarded certificates and mementos in recognition of their academic achievements. A special highlight of the ceremony was the recognition of Imyatetla Imsong as the college topper, who received her award from the chief guest.


The ceremony began with the inauguration by acting principal of MGM College, Dr. R. K. Behera, followed by a warm welcome address from Fr. Giju George, the College Administrator. Distinguished members of the college’s governing body were also present at the programme.


SAS NU: The School of Agricultural Sciences (SAS), Medziphema Campus, Nagaland University, celebrated its 29th Freshers’ Social on September 20, with MLA & Advisor for Transport and Technical Education, Temjenmenba, as the special guest.
The event welcomed new students and offered words of encouragement for their academic journey.


MLA & Advisor Temjenmenba, in his address urged the students to use the knowledge they acquire for self-development and progress. He emphasized that while information is abundant, its value lies in practical application.

Highlighting the rapid pace of technological advancements, he advised students to remain adaptable and open-minded, as opportunities may arise in unexpected fields.

Drawing from his own experiences of studying diverse courses and working in various roles, he stressed the importance of passion, perseverance, and commitment in achieving success. He also reminded the students to stay connected to their cultural roots, as it would inspire them to contribute meaningfully to society.


UCD: Unity College, Dimapur (UCD), welcomed its new batch of postgraduate students with a vibrant Freshers’ Day celebration on September 21, at the college premises.
The event was held aimed to foster community spirit and enthusiasm among the freshers as they embark on their academic journey.


The program commenced with an invocation prayer, seeking blessings for the students’ academic success. Dr. Lichumo Enie, Principal of Unity College, delivered the welcome address, offering valuable advice on excelling in the competitive job market.

He encouraged the freshers to focus on enhancing their CVs through postgraduate studies, improving academic skills, and committing to personal growth. He also highlighted the importance of time management, critical thinking, leadership, and peer engagement, urging students to develop a diverse skill set for future success.


The event featured cultural performances that showcased the diversity and talent of the students, bringing color and vibrancy to the occasion.


As part of the celebration, first-semester postgraduate students from the Departments of Commerce, Political Science, and History participated in a self-introduction segment. Akivili from the Department of History was awarded the “Best Fresher’s Introduction” after a tie-breaker.
