Association of Kohima Municipal Wards Council (AKMWC) has demanded setting up of a new forensic science laboratory (FSL) at Kohima or revive the erstwhile Kohima FSL and deploy adequate personnel.
In a representation to the home commissioner Nagaland, AKMWC president Thejao Sekhose and general secretary Hukato Chishi also appealed to the state government to expedite Nagaland FSL Dimanur operations to reach full capacity.
Concerning the murder of a 22-year-ld female athlete, the AKMWC expressed dismay that even after the body was discovered and reported to the police as early as 7 am, the forensic personnel from FSL Dimapur reached only after 2 pm for crime scene examination.
AKMWC said the delay subjected the bereaved family, friends and neighbours to needless torment as they had to wait for over seven hours due to the lack of FSL at Kohima.
The council asserted that crucial role of forensic science in crime scene management, scientific investigation, and production of court-admissible evidence cannot be overstated. AKMWC said that absence of such facilities and personnel in Kohima had long handicapped law enforcement and prosecutorial agencies, resulting in delay or denial of justice for victims and society.
Stating that it can no longer remain a mute spectator, AKMWC has cautioned that it could be forced to take all steps to ensure just demands for the citizens of Kohima were met expeditiously.
