Anti-Leprosy Day and the Sparsh Leprosy awareness campaign were observed at Old Jalukie in Peren on January 30 under the theme “Ending Discrimination, Ensuring Dignity.”
According to a press release issued by the CMO office, Peren, Pehiareudi Zeliang, PMW, in his welcome address stated that leprosy is one of the oldest diseases known to humankind. He explained the different types of leprosy and highlighted the importance of early detection and timely treatment to prevent complications.
PMW, Somaya Shimrah, informed that leprosy is completely curable and that early treatment can prevent disability. He further stated that free treatment is available at all government health centres.
During the programme, the anti-leprosy pledge was administered to the participants, and IEC materials were distributed to raise awareness. Free OTC medicines were also distributed to 63 beneficiaries during the campaign.
The programme concluded with an invocation by senior health educator Kedunol Valeo, followed by a vote of thanks delivered by urban health worker Joseph Kamei.
