Children of Peace Channel, along with public leaders, have appealed to the Nagaland State Transport (NST) department to introduce a regular bus service between Niuland and Dimapur districts, citing the absence of affordable public transport as a major hindrance to learning and exposure.
During an interaction with Peace Channel Club members, children expressed difficulties in travelling to neighbouring districts due to high private transport costs. Public leaders, village chairmen and civil society representatives also echoed these concerns, pointing out that despite Niuland being the headquarters of a new district, it continues to face severe transport challenges.
The issue came to the fore when many children were unable to attend training programmes and Peace Retreat Sessions held in Dimapur and Chümoukedima owing to the lack of viable transport options. Responding to the concern, Peace Channel engaged two MSW students from NEISSR, Jese T Sumi and Yantsumong, who carried out a basic need assessment in affected villages. Their findings confirmed that the absence of regular NST services was causing educational, social and developmental disadvantages for the people of Niuland.
Accompanied by Peace Channel Club members and local leaders, the children have requested NST authorities to introduce a daily or at least regular bus service connecting Niuland and Dimapur as a “Christmas gift” to the people.
