A one-day awareness programme-cum-input distribution on the promotion of pulses in the North Eastern Hill (NEH) region was held at Peducha Village on November 17. The event was organized by ICAR-AICRP on Kharif Pulses, School of Agricultural Sciences (SAS), Nagaland University, in collaboration with the Indian Institute of Pulses Research (IIPR), Kanpur, SAMETI Medziphema, the Department of Botany at Kohima Science College, the Department of Agriculture, the Department of Soil and Water Conservation, and the Research and Training Centre, Sechu, Zubza.
Speaking at the programme as special guest, PC, AICRP on Kharif pulses, Dr. Aditya Prata highlighted the importance of pulses as a primary protein source in the diet, government initiatives such as the National Pulses Programme focused on the NEH region, and the potential of pulse cultivation in Nagaland. He also commended the efforts of AICRP on Kharif Pulses at SAS, Nagaland University, for effectively reaching farmers at the grassroots level.
Professor Dipak Sinha, guest of honour, praised the efficiency and success of the programme, acknowledging the collaborative efforts of the Ministry of Agriculture, ICAR, Nagaland University, and various state departments in benefiting farmers directly. Dr. Hironya Kumar Borah, special invitee, emphasized the significance of pulses and lauded the contributions of farmers in promoting pulse cultivation.
Other collaborators who addressed the farmers included director SAMETI and Principal IETC Bodevi Shyuya, associate professor, Department of Botany, KSC Dr. Samadangla Ao, DAO, Department of Agriculture, Kekhrieletuo Yhome,; and Zuchumi Ovung, JSCO, Department of Soil and Water Conservation. A brief presentation on the Kharif Pulses Programme was made by Dr. Lawrence Kithan, Scientist, AICRP on Kharif Pulses, SAS, Nagaland University.
A total of 62 farmers attended the programme and received agricultural inputs including knapsack sprayers, seeds of chickpea and pea, milled arhar (dal) Minchu, Pseudomonas sp., scrapers, and sickles to support pulse cultivation in the region.
