The 19th edition of the Phek Town Inter-Ward Tournament commenced on Thursday at Phek Town, with Kuzholuzo (Azo) Nienu, MLA gracing the opening ceremony as chief guest.
Addressing the gathering, Nienu highlighted the growing significance of sports as a global industry and emphasized the state government’s commitment under chief minister Dr. Neiphiu Rio to promote sports in Nagaland. He urged young people to take responsibility for honing their skills and talents, stating that there is no room to blame the government in this regard.
The MLA also lauded the recent policy of open recruitment in uniformed departments, noting that it has eliminated backdoor appointments and marked a step toward accountability and transparency in governance. “This itself is a big achievement for the Government as slowly and steadily the Government is moving towards accountability and transparency, which is a sign of good governance,” he remarked.
The inaugural function was chaired by Phek Town Youth Society (PTYS) vice president Kekhrienesa Venuh, while PTYS president Seyiengoi Soho delivered the presidential address. PTYS games and sports secretary Vekhoseyi Keyho administered the oath to the participating teams.
Organized by PTYS under the theme “Promoting peaceful & inclusive societies through sports”, the tournament will continue till January 22. The valedictory function will be graced by Phek Deputy Commissioner Rhosietho Nguori.
