Nagaland Beekeeping & Honey Mission observes 7th Nagaland Honey Bee Day

DIMAPUR

Nagaland Beekeeping & Honey Mission (NBHM) observed the 7th Nagaland Honey Bee Day on December 5 at its Multi Utility Center, 6th Mile Sovima, Chümoukedima, under the theme “Securing the future of Honey Enterprises through financial literacy.”
According to a DIPR report, NBHM chairman, Obed Quinker, in his address, lauded the dedication of beekeepers and the Mission’s continuous efforts in uplifting the honey industry in Nagaland. He said Nagaland enjoys a unique ecological advantage with pristine forests and rare floral diversity that produce some of the finest honey varieties in the region. He noted that the growing interest of Naga youth in apiculture reflects a promising future for rural entrepreneurship and sustainable livelihoods.
Quinker encouraged beekeepers to adopt scientific methods, stressing that modern apiculture is not only about honey extraction but also about maintaining healthy colonies, promoting pollination, and safeguarding biodiversity. He underscored the importance of branding and quality assurance, urging young entrepreneurs to highlight Nagaland’s natural uniqueness to gain a competitive edge in national and international markets.
He further emphasized sustainable and ethical honey production, reminding participants that bees are essential contributors to food security and environmental balance. Financial literacy, he said, plays a crucial role in helping entrepreneurs manage ventures effectively, whether through investment planning, accessing credit, or navigating digital transactions. He expressed confidence that collaboration with ICICI Foundation would empower beekeepers to make informed financial decisions.
Reaffirming NBHM’s commitment to nurturing a vibrant honey-based economy, Quinker said the Mission has come a long way since its inception in 2007 despite challenges. With continued government support, he expressed hope that Nagaland would emerge as a leading model for scientific beekeeping and honey entrepreneurship in the country.
Earlier, NBHM deputy team leader, Er. Khuvozoyi Vese, delivered the keynote address, highlighting the importance of financial literacy in strengthening honey enterprises. He pointed out that Nagaland’s honey consumption—192 grams per capita annually, far above the national average—creates strong market potential for niche honey products.
The programme also featured a short speech by ICICI Foundation zonal head, Pumgouthang, and a special number by Longaro W. Okhyupvui. Vote of thanks was delivered by NBHM team member, Nzambemo K. Lotha.
A technical session on financial literacy, held in collaboration with ICICI Foundation, was moderated by NBHM team members Letgong Patrick and Chubanungla Shilu. Resource person, P. Motu, branch manager, ICICI Bank, spoke on investment schemes for small entrepreneurs and conducted an awareness session on cyber fraud and safe digital banking. An interaction session followed, before NBHM team member, Bendangmoa Yim, delivered the vote of thanks.
