Consul General of Bhutan in Guwahati, Jigme Thinlye Namgyal expressed deep admiration for Nagaland’s cultural vibrancy and natural beauty while addressing the 17th Hornbill International Naga Wrestling Championship 2024 at Chiechama Ground.

State chief minister Neiphiu Rio and host of legislators and officials were also present.

Speaking as the special guest, the Consul General, accompanied by a large delegation, highlighted the shared cultural affinities between Bhutan and Nagaland.
He conveyed gratitude to the state government for facilitating their visit and providing an opportunity to witness the Hornbill Festival’s premier wrestling event.

“We are honoured to be among the kind and generous people of Nagaland. Your love for cultural heritage, pristine environment, and sense of community resonates deeply with us,” he stated.

Namgyal described the Hornbill Festival as a unique celebration that showcased the distinct traditions of Nagaland’s 18 major tribes. He praised the colourful attires, rich musical heritage, and traditional cuisine, noting their similarity to Bhutanese culture. Highlighting the significance of wrestling, he remarked that it was also a cherished sport in Bhutan’s traditions.

The Consul General’s delegation included officials from Bhutan’s eastern region, particularly from Trashigang Dzongkhag, who are preparing for the upcoming Rhododendron Week scheduled from April 3 to 9, 2025, in Merak and Sakten.

Namgyal said the visit was a learning experience for his team as they observed the organisation of the internationally-renowned Hornbill Festival.
He expressed delight in the shared cultural symbol of the rhododendron, noting its prominence in both regions.

“It is fascinating to learn that the world’s tallest rhododendron tree is found in Nagaland, on Mount Japfü. This connection feels auspicious as we prepare for our own Rhododendron Week,” he remarked.

Extending an invitation, Namgyal encouraged the people of Nagaland to visit Bhutan during the spring festival. “We would be delighted to welcome you to experience the indigenous culture and pristine beauty of Bhutan’s eastern communities.
