BJP mahila accuses oppn of blocking women’s quota
BJP Mahila Morcha Dimapur Unit on Tuesday accused opposition parties of misconstruing the intent of the women’s reservation bill, spreading false narratives and obstructing the legislation.
Addressing a press conference at the BJP Dimapur District Office on the theme “Attack on Women’s Rights due to Negativity of Congress & Opposition,” Shekishe Awomi said the event was organised to clear alleged misinformation being spread over the women’s reservation initiative.
He said that under the leadership of Narendra Modi, the BJP introduced a proposal for 33 percent reservation for women in Parliament to strengthen their participation in governance.
Awomi termed the opposition’s stand politically motivated and said linking the 2023 legislation with future delimitation and seat expansion was intended to ensure structured implementation.
He added that representation of Northeastern states would be protected.
BJP state council member Er. Kahuli Sema expressed disappointment over the failure of the women’s reservation bills, accusing the opposition of taking contradictory positions by publicly supporting the proposal while not backing it in Parliament. She termed it a missed opportunity for women across the country.
Dimapur mahila morcha unit president Aboli V. Awomi appealed to women across party lines to unite in support of the reservation, saying it would empower women and strengthen their role in decision-making. She also expressed confidence in the leadership of Narendra Modi.
BJYM state general secretary Likao Odyuo said delimitation and 33 percent women’s reservation were complementary reforms. He added that with India’s growing population, increasing Lok Sabha seats was necessary for fair representation. BJP leaders reaffirmed their commitment to women’s reservation.
BJP only keen on politics, not for Women quota: NPCC

KOHIMA, APR 21 (NPN): NPCC leaders, spearheaded by Lok Sabha MP and state president Supongmeren Jamir, on Tuesday slammed the BJP-led Centre for exploiting the women’s reservation issue by tying it to delimitation for electoral gains ahead of 2029 polls.
Speaking at Congress Bhavan, Jamir referenced the special Parliament session on April 16-17, which debated the Constitution (106th Amendment) Act, 2023– mandating 33% reservation for women in Lok Sabha and state assemblies– alongside delimitation and seat readjustments for Parliament, assemblies, and Delhi’s Legislative Assembly.
He explained that implementation hinges on a fresh Census followed by delimitation, with no constituency changes possible until after the first post-2026 Census and data publication.
Yet, Jamir alleged the Centre deliberately conflated the two, despite the lengthy process.
“The BJP aims to inflate Lok Sabha seats favoring larger states,” he charged, accusing the government of blaming the Opposition—especially Congress and the INDIA bloc—after the bill’s defeat. Jamir stressed the INDIA bloc’s support for pre-2029 implementation but criticized BJP’s lack of a firm timeline.
He flagged Census delays: the last was in 2011, with 2021 postponed due to COVID-19.
For smaller states like Nagaland, Jamir voiced alarms—even if delimitation adds a Lok Sabha seat to its current two, enforcing 33% reservation poses practical hurdles. He called on all Nagaland parties to unite in protecting state and Northeast interests.
NPCC Working President Khriedi Theünuo slammed the Centre’s women’s reservation push as “politically miscalculated.” He said the 2023 bill, passed by Parliament and assented by the President, demands updated Census, delimitation, and broad consultation for rollout. He accuses BJP and allies of electoral games, sowing confusion over true implementation.
Meanwhile, NPCC Working President C. Apok Jamir accused the Centre of insincerity in enacting the 2023 women’s reservation law, with notification delayed until April 2026. He labeled the special Parliament session during elections as “malafide intent” to sway voters, potentially breaching the Model Code of Conduct, and criticized PM Modi for scapegoating the Opposition.
“Voters won’t be fooled,” Jamir asserted, pointing to West Bengal’s progress in women’s representation. Congress demands a clear implementation mechanism in the monsoon session to meet 2029 polls, safeguarding Northeast states like Nagaland.
