Ajay Kumar Bhalla sworn in as 22nd Governor of Nagaland

Noting that Nagaland was brimming with immense potential, the newly sworn-in Governor of Nagaland Ajay Kumar Bhalla on Monday said the entrepreneurial spirit of youth, the unique traditions of organic farming and horticulture, the untapped possibilities in tourism, and the rich heritage of art and crafts presented a formidable opportunity for sustainable and inclusive growth.
The governor, however, called for working collectively to further improve connectivity, enhance healthcare accessibility, provide quality education and skill development to children and create more opportunities for employment and entrepreneurship.
In his address to the people of Nagaland on assumption of the office of the governor of Nagaland, the governor assured the state government of his fullest support and cooperation in those efforts, and work in close harmony for the welfare of the people. Stressing on the dream of a Viksit Bharat by 2047—a developed India, the governor said that every region and every state must be an equal partner in this progress.
He said Nagaland, with its unique strengths and strategic location, had a vital role to play in this national story. “It is my earnest desire that we work together—the government, the civil society, the tribal bodies and every citizen—to ensure that Nagaland not only keeps pace with the nation but also becomes a shining example of its developmental ethos,” Bhalla said.
Bhalla expressed gratitude for the warm and gracious welcome extended the people of Nagaland led by the chief minister.
Governor said he was “deeply mindful” of the trust reposed on him by the country’s leadership led by the President of India and the Prime Minister.
Bhalla said his appointment was not merely an opportunity to serve, but a sacred responsibility bestowed upon him to work for the welfare of the people of Nagaland and for the progress of the great nation.
On the occasion, Bhalla also expressed grief over the passing of his predecessor La Ganesan. “His sudden and tragic passing has left a void that is deeply felt across the state and the country,” Bhalla said. Bhalla said late Ganesan had set a benchmark of public service that he can only aspire to follow.
The governor, however, assured that he would strive to uphold the “highest traditions of this honoured position” and to live up to the expectations of the people.
Bhalla said Nagaland always held a special fascination for him. He said the rich cultural diversity, the resilience of the people and the scenic beauty of this land have a unique allure.
In his previous capacities in government service, Bhalla said he was associated with the developmental journey of the Northeast including Nagaland. “I feel truly blessed and privileged to now return as the First Citizen of this beautiful state and with God’s blessings, that I pledge to contribute to Nagaland’s progress to the very best of my ability,” he maintained.
Earlier, Ajay Kumar Bhalla was sworn-in as the 22nd Governor of Nagaland in a swearing-in ceremony held at Dr Imkongliba Ao Hall Raj Bhavan, here on Monday.
The oath of office was administered by Gauhati High Court Chief Justice, Ashutosh Kumar, in the presence of the chief minister of Nagaland, Dr. Neiphiu Rio and his cabinet, Member of Parliament, advisors, MLAs and senior civil, police and military officials from both central and State government, members of civil societies of Nagaland.
The Governor was also accorded the Rastriya Salute by the Nagaland Police Mahilla (IR) contingents at Raj Bhavan. State chief secretary Sentiyanger Imchen conducted the swearing in ceremony.
The chief secretary introduced the chief minister of Nagaland to the governor which was followed by introduction of the speaker and other ministers to the newly sworn in governor led by the chief minister.
After which, governor joined the guests and proceeded for “At Home” at the Banquet Hall. On conclusion of the “At Home”, the Governor departed for Raj Bhavan.
Bhalla, is also the Governor of Manipur was given the additional charge of Nagaland following the death of the previous Governor, La. Ganesan on August 15, 2025.
