The three-day 5th convention of the Catholic Association of Nagaland (CAN) commenced on January 9 at St. Xavier Parish, Jalukie, with a solemn tribute to former CAN executives who passed away during the 2023–2026 tenure.
The remembrance formed a reflective and prayerful beginning to the convention, as the gathering observed a moment of silence, commending the departed souls to God’s eternal mercy.
Among those remembered were Fr. Thettayil Joseph (TT), SDB (1954–2023), who served as Ecclesiastical Assistant of CAN during 2000–2003 and was noted for his pastoral zeal and promotion of lay leadership; Lucy Nsü Rengma (1960–2024), former Joint Secretary (1983–1987; 1991–2000), recognised as a pioneering leader and foundational figure of the Association; and Mezhü-o Marcus Solo (1952–2025), treasurer from 2016 to 2020, recalled for his calm demeanour, integrity, and steadfast commitment to Catholic values.
The association also remembered in prayer all CAN members who passed away in the past three years, entrusting them to God’s mercy.
Following the tribute, the convention formally got underway with the opening ceremony. Firhesie Nyuwi, executive member of CAN, served as Master of Ceremonies. The programme featured a musical welcome by the St. Xavier Brass Band, flag hoisting by Fr. Jaison C. J., Parish Priest of St. Xavier Church, Jalukie, and the rendition of the convention theme song by the Zeliangrong Catholic Youth Association, Nagaland.
Delivering the welcome address, Elias T. Lotha, advisor and former president of CAN, highlighted the importance of unity and committed lay participation in the life of the Church.
The opening programme culminated in the inaugural mass, celebrated by Fr. Carolus Neisalhou Kuotsu, Vicar General of the Diocese of Kohima and Ecclesiastical Assistant of CAN, as principal celebrant.
The Eucharistic celebration invoked God’s blessings on the convention and its deliberations, marking a prayerful and dignified beginning to the proceedings.
The liturgy was coordinated by the Mary Help of Christians Cathedral Parish, Kohima.
The triennial convention will conclude on January 12.
