A candlelight vigil was held on November 4 at the DBHSS Basketball Court, Wokha Town, in memory of a 22-year-old promising young basketball player whose untimely and tragic death has left the community in deep shock and sorrow.
The programme was chaired by General Secretary of the Wokha District Basketball Association (WDBA) Mhabemo E. Murry and began with an invocation by principal of DBHSS Wokha Rev. Fr. Stephen, followed by the lighting of candles in remembrance of the departed.
Delivering a heartfelt address, president of WDBA M. Renthungo Mozhui expressed profound grief over the loss of Vihozhenu, describing her as a promising and rising basketball player in her early twenties whose passion and dedication to the sport had inspired many.
He recounted that the victim’sbody was discovered under suspicious circumstances and condemned the incident in the strongest terms, urging the authorities to conduct a swift and impartial investigation to bring the perpetrators to justice. He stated that the heinous act was not only an assault on an individual but also on the very spirit of sportsmanship, dedication, and hope that she represented.
Mozhui further called upon the community to remain united against hatred and violence and to strive towards building a society where every young person can pursue their dreams safely and fearlessly.
As the vigil progressed, the gathering joined in the soulful hymn Amazing Grace performed by Nchumbemo Patton, creating a poignant atmosphere of reflection and solidarity. The programme concluded with a vote of thanks from the chairperson.
The event brought together friends, teammates, coaches, and well-wishers who paid their respects and celebrated the life and legacy of a bright star gone too soon, yet an enduring inspiration for future generations.
