Nagaland: CPO hosts seminar to commemorate 150th anniversary

Chakhroma Public Organization (CPO) organized a one day seminar at CPO Hall, Chümoukedima on Saturday, as part of the events commemorating its 150th anniversary.


Addressing the gathering as the special guest, Advisor, Urban Development & Municipal Affairs, Zhaleo Rio, acknowledged CPO and the 150 Years Jubilee organizing committee for their efforts in planning the event, and also reflected on the historical influence of Chakhroma Angamis in Dimapur, while acknowledging the growth of various Naga villages in the region today. He also expressed appreciation for the friendship between CPO and Western Sumi Hoho, highlighting their efforts in promoting peaceful coexistence among Naga communities.


Zhaleo later mentioned that Dimapur was created with Chümoukedima as the District Headquarter, however adding that for various reasons the District HQ was never functional.
He however said that Chümoukedima has been developing rapidly for last 30 years despite all hurdles.


He later clarified that Chümoukedima was created purely considering the administrative convenience and appealed that there should be no misconception regarding the creation.
In the first session, Commissioner of Police, Dimapur, Kevithuto Sophie, spoke on the topic, “Challenges before Naga Society”. He addressed the issues of corruption, noting that public demands on officers and leaders contribute to financial corruption.


He also emphasized the need for skill based education system, encouraging youth to explore vocational training and alternative employment avenues beyond government jobs.
In the second session, Fire Prevention & Audit Officer, Nagaland Fire & Emergency Services, Kenny Khing, led the session on the topic, “Fire Safety”.

He discussed basic fire safety measures, focusing on domestic LPG and electrical fire hazards, and urged village leaders to promote awareness in their communities. He also highlighted the Nagaland Fire & Emergency Services Act, 2021, and dwelled briefly on the shortage of qualified fire service professionals in the state.


Meanwhile, Sr. Advocate, Guwahati High Court Kohima Bench & president, High Court Bar Association, Kohima, Adv. CT Jamir, delved into the topic, “Legal Rights & Responsibilities”, stressing on the importance of understanding both legal rights and responsibilities, with particular emphasis on the Nagaland Village Council Act, 1978, and other relevant legislation. Jamir also encouraged village leaders to promote civic responsibility, including sanitation and adherence to traffic rules.


In the fourth session, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Traffic), Dimapur, Meren Chenth, dwelled on the topic, “Traffic Safety/Rules”, where he underscored the need for road safety awareness, particularly within households. He highlighted the Motor Vehicles Act, focusing on juvenile driving, traffic violations, and penalties.


In the final session, Designated Officer, Department of Health & Family Welfare, Kezhangulie Yimchinger, presented on the topic, “Food Safety”. He explained the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006, and the role of Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI). He later advised entrepreneurs in food industry on licensing procedures and urged consumers to remain vigilant about food safety, reporting any cases of adulteration to the authorities.


Earlier, the programme was chaired and opening remarks delivered by convenor, planning & organizing committee, CPO Sesquicentennial anniversary, Dr Kevingulie Khrto and short speech by deputy commissioner, Chümoukedima, Polan John.
