Chakhesang Youth Front (CYF) has issued a stern circular following reports of gunshots fired with the intent to hunt the Hornbill recently sighted in Surhoba village.
In a press release, CYF vice president, Biodiversity Cell I/C, Nüveta Khüsöh, and secretary, Biodiversity Cell, Khrolhiweu Tsühah said that such acts as a serious violation of standing resolutions and a threat to ongoing conservation efforts.
CYF said the Hornbill holds profound cultural significance for the Chakhesang and Naga communities, symbolising identity, tradition, and harmonious coexistence with nature. It stated that its protection is not only an ecological duty but also a cultural imperative. CYF reminded all members that the Hornbill was a protected species, and any attempt to hunt, harm, or disturb is strictly forbidden. It warned that violators will face stringent disciplinary measures, including public disclosure of names, and legal action under the Wildlife Protection Act, 1972, which carries severe penalties including imprisonment. Therefore CYF has urged all units and members to remain vigilant and ensure that no hunting of Hornbill or other wildlife occurs under any circumstances. CYF reiterated that wildlife protection was a collective responsibility, and strict adherence to this directive and CPO standing resolutions was mandatory.
