Nagaland: DANU, a sculpture of strength at Hornbill Festival

DANU is a creation of Irish artists Lisa Sweeney, Richard Babington, and Johnny O’Reilly from their internationally acclaimed spectacle theatre company, Macha, along with Indian artist Sanjib Shah from Behala Nutan Dal. The Celtic figure Danu represents themes of motherhood, resilience, and strength. In Irish tradition, Danu is associated with Brigid, who later transformed into Ireland’s only female patron saint. Her design incorporates elements from Ireland’s four ancient seasonal festivals including Samhain, Beltane, Imbolc, and Lughnasadh along with recurring floral motifs.
First showcased in Kolkata, the installation was crafted using iron, wood, bamboo, and fabric, with a small pool of water at its base creating a rippling light effect to reflect her connection to rivers and the life-giving force of water. Danu also includes a St. Brigid’s Cross, symbolizing protection and blessing.
The landmark public art project is supported by the Embassy of Ireland in New Delhi, the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade.
