Nagaland: DBPF for strict enforcement of NLTP Act

Dimapur Baptist Pastors’ Fellowship (DBPF) has firmly opposed the state government’s proposal to repeal the NLTP Act of 1989, highlighting that, despite the Act’s comprehensive framework, enforcement has been lacking, with minimal government efforts to uphold its provisions.

In a press note, DBPF said as a church community, the acknowledged its responsibility to uphold biblical moral principles and ethic. However, they stressed that the primary responsibility for law enforcement lies with the state, for which they asserted that the government should ensure that the Act be enforced fully.

DBPF expressed concern that the reconsideration of the NLTP Act seemed driven by the belief that quality liquor was preferable to adulterated versions and that liquor sales were a primary revenue source for the predominantly Christian state.

They argued that profiting from alcohol sales at the community’s expense was neither sustainable nor ethical. DBPF urged the government to seek alternative revenue-generating industries and employment opportunities that do not compromise the health and future of the youth.

They voiced strong discontent with the current non-implementation of the NLTP Act and the move towards easier public access to liquor, warning of its long-term negative impact on the state.

They insisted that the government take proactive measures to enforce the Act, including establishing dedicated offices and recruiting personnel for its implementation, as highlighted by the advisor in the media.

DBPF also called for action against locations where liquor is openly sold and requested a prohibition of liquor sales during the Hornbill Festival at Kisama to maintain the event’s integrity. DBPF said it aims to collectively safeguard society and foster a healthier future for upcoming generations.
