Nagaland District-level Padayatra held in Kohima to promote unity

KOHIMA

A district-level Padayatra promoting the message of unity was held at Kohima College on November 19, organised by My Bharat-Kohima under the Ministry of Youth Resources and Sports in coordination with the District Administration.
Gracing the occasion as special guest, Dr. Tseilhoutuo Rhütso MLA invoked the legacy of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, stating that the spirit of unity he demonstrated remains deeply relevant today. “If Sardar Patel could unite over 560 princely states, why can’t we unite a handful of tribes in our society?” he asked, urging youth to rise above tribalism and work for harmony among Nagas.
Encouraging students to adopt broader perspectives, Rhütso said they should see themselves as future “international citizens.” He also reminded them of the sacrifices made by parents and elders for their education, describing academic success as a “harvest” that honours their labour. He applauded the students’ participation in the Unity March and encouraged them to continue marching “every day for the unity, peace, and prosperity of the Nagas.”
Deputy Commissioner Kohima, B. Henok Buchem, in his address, described the event as a moment to reflect on public service and community responsibility. Recalling his study of Patel’s biography, Buchem said Patel was the backbone of Mahatma Gandhi’s success and quoted, “One person cannot do everything, but one person can do something.” He urged students to embrace three guiding principles—fear of the Lord, obedience to parents, and discipline—for a meaningful life.
The programme also featured a youth speech by K. Chumseli Anar and a cultural performance by the Jubilant Cultural Group. The highlight of the event was the administering of the Unity Pledge by the special guest, reaffirming commitment to national unity, integrity, and security. The Unity March was officially flagged off from Kohima College and proceeded to the Nagaland Civil Secretariat Junction.
