Nagaland: DMC sanitation workers protest against non-payment of salary

Staff ReporterDIMAPUR, DEC 11 (NPN)

Sanitation workers under the Dimapur Municipal Council (DMC) on Thursday protested against non-payment of salary by refusing to clear the garbage around the city.
Speaking to the media, DMC administrator Thungchanbemo Tungoe confirmed that sanitation workers did not report for duty. He admitted that the workers have not received their salaries for the past three months. Tungoe, however, said that efforts were underway to resolve the issue at the earliest.
Employees of the DMC sanitation branch- including sardars, drivers and labourers- have submitted a memorandum to the DMC authorities seeking urgent clearance of their four months’ pending salaries (August to November).
However, it was learnt that the DMC had reportedly released one month’s salary on Tuesday.
The sanitation staff stated that prolonged delay has caused immense financial hardship to their families who depend solely on their monthly income.
The employees cautioned that failure to do so would compel them to cease work.
Meanwhile, residents and business owners have expressed concern over the growing sanitation issue and urged authorities to address both the workers’ grievances and the urgent need for waste clearance.
