Dimapur Naga Students’ Union (DNSU) has strongly objected to the “growing and unethical practice” among various educational institutions in Dimapur of compelling students and parents to purchase textbooks and school uniforms exclusively from the institutions—often at inflated prices far above market rates.
In a press release, DNSU president Hinoto P Aomi and general secretary Michael Kath described the imposition as “unacceptable,” stating it restricted parents’ freedom to buy from any legitimate vendor and placed an undue financial burden on families, especially those from economically weaker sections.
DNSU reiterated that no institution had the authority to enforce mandatory purchases from the school and termed such profiteering as exploitative.
The union highlighted that many institutions changed textbooks every academic year, preventing reuse of old books and increasing costs for students from humble backgrounds.
The union pointed out that this practice contravened the spirit of the Right of Children to Free and Compulsory Education (RTE) Act, 2009, which emphasises accessibility, affordability, and prevention of commercial exploitation in education.
DNSU further reminded that Article 21 of the Constitution of India (Right to Life and Personal Liberty), as interpreted by the Supreme Court, includes the right to live with dignity and make dignified choices.
The union stated that forcing parents to buy overpriced books and uniforms restricted this freedom and caused financial distress.
The union has appealed to educational institutions not to frequently change school uniforms or introduce new patterns without genuine necessity.
It said constant changes compelled parents to purchase expensive new uniforms from selected suppliers at inflated prices, and uniforms should be designed for long-term stability.
DNSU asserted that education must remain a noble pursuit grounded in equity, not a commercial enterprise to extract money from vulnerable parents.
It urged school managements to introspect and realign with the true ethos and purpose of education.
The union reaffirmed its commitment to safeguarding student welfare and opposing exploitative practices.
DNSU called upon the parents to cooperate and extend full support.
In case of grievances, suggestions, or complaints related to student welfare, DNSU encouraged the public to contact its office or education secretary Kevin Gonmei (9560378048).
