State chief minister, Dr. Neiphiu Rio, on Saturday said that the legacy of Dr. Talimeren Ao, India’s first Olympic football captain, would continue to inspire generations across the country.
The chief minister stated this while speaking at the inaugural session of Dr. Talimeren Ao Junior Girls’ National Football Championship 2025-26 (Tier–2) at the Chümoukedima Football Stadium.
Rio described the occasion as momentous, not merely because Nagaland was hosting a national football tournament for the first time, but because it honoured a remarkable Indian, who rose from the rocky fields of Changki to become the face of Indian football on the world stage.
“Dr. T. Ao proved that courage and passion can overcome every limitation. His humble beginnings shaped his discipline and strength, and his leadership at the 1948 London Olympics represented a young nation stepping into history.” Rio stated.
Further, the chief minister lauded the All India Football Federation (AIFF) for renaming the championship after Dr. T. Ao, calling it a “fitting national recognition” of a Naga icon whose contribution extended beyond sports. He said the milestone was made possible through the sustained efforts of the state government and Nagaland Football Association.
“For the first time, a national tournament has been named after a Naga personality. It is a proud moment for our State and a reminder that even the smallest corners of India can produce heroes who inspire the world,” he added.
Rio emphasised that the championship symbolised the rising strength of women’s football in India, reflecting the country’s progress towards equality, empowerment, and opportunity. To the players from the 13 participating states, Rio said they were the heart and soul of this tournament, and urged them to play with passion, respect and courage. “True victory lies in integrity and sportsmanship,” he stated.
Rio expressed hope that hosting a national event of this scale would pave the way for more national and international tournaments in the State, showcasing the State’s readiness in sporting infrastructure, hospitality and organisational capacity.
“Let this championship be remembered as the moment young athletes from across India came together to compete, learn and inspire. May it ignite dreams that reach far beyond this field, just as Dr. Talimeren Ao once did”, Rio said.
Meanwhile, delivering the welcome address, Advisor, Youth Resources & Sports, S. Keoshu Yimkhiung, said that it was a moment of immense pride for the state to host a national championship dedicated to a legendary son of the soil.
“Sports, especially football, has a unique power to unite people and build character. This event is not just a competition but a celebration of talent, teamwork and the spirit of women’s sports,” he stated.
He reminded the participants that while victory was important, true spirit of sportsmanship lay in participation, effort, discipline, and respect.
Earlier, the programme was chaired by Commissioner & Secretary, Department of Youth Resources & Sports, Anthony Ngullie, invocation was offered by Pastor, Garden Mission Church, Sovima, Nini Sekhose, while Nagaland Football Association President and co-executive member, AIFF, K. Neibou Sekhose gave introductory note.
The inaugural session also featured special numbers, which included folk fusion dance and a special song.
