Educational institutions organize extracurricular activities for students

As part of the academic and extracurricular activities, educational institutions across the state organized various programmes.

NEISSR: North East Institute of Social Sciences and Research (NEISSR), Peace Centre, 7th Mile, Chumoukedima, celebrated its 9th Graduation Day on November 1, 2024, at the Bishop Abraham Memorial Hall. A total of 87 students graduated with a Master of Social Work degree.

The event was graced by Dr. D. Gnanadurai, Vice Chancellor of St. Joseph University, Chumoukedima, as chief guest and M. Rollan Lotha, Chief Operating Officer – Program, NSRLM, as special guest.

Dr. D Gnanadurai in his speech, inspired graduates with a message focused on peace and environmental responsibility. He congratulated the graduating class and highlighted the expectations society holds for social workers—to turn theoretical knowledge into practical, transformative actions.

He urged graduates to cultivate a positive outlook and set high goals, emphasizing the importance of humility and resilience, drawing inspiration from the life of Ratan Tata. M Rollan Lotha highlighted the government’s recognition of social work and urged collaborations with government bodies and NGOs for campus recruitment, noting that these partnerships were valuable for advancing community development.

He also emphasized the importance of holding true to social work values, being adaptable, and exploring multi-disciplinary roles, including entrepreneurship. He advocated the “Back to Land” initiative, proposing it as a solution to unemployment by reconnecting with traditional practices. Dr. Fr. C.P. Anto, Principal of NEISSR, in his welcome speech, honored faculty and staff for their commitment to shaping the graduates.

At the ceremony, outstanding students; Vevolü Kulla-O received the Class Topper award, James Phanungkiu was honored as Best Student, Pezangulie Suokhrie as Philanthropist, Ethutsolo Naro for Best Research, and Tsulula K for Best Field Work were honoured.

Khenishe K Sumi, MSW batch 2021-23, was lauded for being the first NEISSR student to clear the JRF. The program was chaired by Tshekukhro-u Akami, MSW SEM III and Alongba T Sangtam, MSW SEM I with the blessing of Rev. Fr. Chacko Karinthayil, Governing Board Member, NEISSR.

Dr. Abel Ariina, Assistant Professor, NEISSR, facilitated the graduates, while Rev. Fr. G.L. Khing, Vice Principal and Administrator, delivered the vote of thanks.
Fazl Ali College: Political Science Association (PSA) of Fazl Ali College (FAC) commemorated United Nations Day with its Sixth Annual Lecture.

A press release by FAC informed that Assistant Professor of Law, Nagaland University, Dr. Sentikumla, delivered a keynote address on the topic, “Situating Rule of Law in UN Sustainable Development Goals”.


Dr. Sentikumla traced the origins of UN and outlined development decade goals and also provided an in depth explanation of UN’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), emphasizing the significance of Rule of Law (SDG 16) in achieving economic, social, and environmental sustainability globally.


Opangalanger Longkumer and Temjenmerang Imchen, both students of political science honours paper, shared their experiences and insights from attending the North East India Model United Nations (NEIMUN) 2024.


Immanuel College: Immanuel College commemorated “National Unity Day”, to honor the legacy of the Iron Man of India, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, under the initiative of its IQAC on October 30, at the College Auditorium.


A press release by the college informed that principal of the college, Th. Sharatchandra Singh, in his speech highlighted brief overview of Patel’s life and his architectural role in India’s consolidation. He also spoke on educational integration of physical well being, intellectual development along with aesthetic sensibility, social and divine integration.


Oriental College Kohima: Oriental College Kohima (OCK) concluded three days Skill Fest, showcasing array of student made crafts and services.


A press release by OCK informed that students were trained in mushroom cultivation, basket making, bamboo works, carpentry, electrical fittings, beauty and wellness, embroidery, knitting and weaving, baking and coffee making.


The concluding remarks was given by VP administration, Chibeni Murry, and vote of thanks by HOD, Dept. of History, Tumben Ngullie. Students also displayed and sold their creations.


Bailey Baptist College: Along with the rest of the nation, Bailey Baptist College, NSS, Wokha, organised the “Diwali with MYBHARAT”, from October 28 to 30. At the event, market cleaning, hospital volunteering, and traffic management were carried out.


Kohima College: Kohima College hosted a session with author and poet Vikram Seth.
The session commenced with a discussion on the theme of “home” in Seth’s works. Seth recited his poignant poem “Homeless,” expressing profound longing for stability and belonging.


While discussing “A Suitable Boy”, one of the longest novels by an Indian author, Seth underscored his dedication to crafting realistic characters. Quoting Nathaniel Hawthorne, he stated, “Easy reading is damn hard writing,” aiming for his work to serve as “plain glass,” enabling readers to perceive the lives of characters clearly. Seth also revealed that elements of his family inspired aspects of “A Suitable Boy,” which is deeply rooted in his “linguistic home” of poetry.


PGC: A mini exhibition on the theme “Fall flowers and greens” was organized by Floriculture Unit of Phek Government College (PGC) on October 28, with an aim to promote and impart importance of floriculture amongst the students. Students from GHSS, Phek also joined the exhibition to fulfill their requirement of providing skills education in their curriculum as per their MoU with Laqsh job skills academy Pvt. Ltd.
