Nagaland Enforcement committee reviews Chathe River mining in Medziphema

DIMAPUR

Medziphema sub-division level enforcement committee held a meeting at the ADC’s Conference Hall, Medziphema, on November 24 to deliberate on monitoring, regulation and enforcement of riverbed mining activities in Chathe River and its tributaries.
According to DIPR report, the meeting was chaired by Additional Deputy Commissioner, Medziphema, P. James Swu, who welcomed members and underscored the need to strengthen monitoring mechanisms. He reminded the committee that its goal should be to protect and revive the Chathe River and its tributaries.
Representatives from the Department of Geology & Mining and Forest Department clarified their roles and responsibilities. Pherima Gaon Bura voiced grievances, highlighting the adverse impact of mining on local communities and agriculture.
Discussions covered the current status of riverbed mining, ongoing activities, review of permits and licenses, and measures against illegal mining. Members also deliberated on community concerns, livelihood impacts, routine inspections, and departmental responsibilities.
The meeting further resolved to undertake cleaning and beautification of all villages under Medziphema sub-division during the festive season. It was attended by all members of the enforcement committee.
