At least 25 individuals from Nagaland were among 117 persons arrested by Maharashtra police for alleged involvement in an international fake call centre scam operating in Aurangabad.
Speaking to Nagaland Post over phone, the Maharashtra police investigating officer confirmed that the arrests were made on October 29 under MIDC CIDCO Police Station following a raid on the illegal call centre. The officer said all accused had been produced before the court, and their bail hearing was scheduled for November 10, 2025.
Police sources disclosed that during interrogation, several of the Naga accused claimed they had taken up the job due to unemployment issues in the state.
Following the arrests, Naga Students’ Union Pune (NSUP) and Naga Students’ Union Mumbai (NSUM) reportedly issued a joint statement informing about the incident.
According to NSUP and NSUM, 25 Nagas have been identified among the suspects, most of them aged between 19 and 29 years. They added that many families in Nagaland were yet to be informed about the arrests. The unions appealed to the public to contact authorities if they had relatives or friends working in call centres in Aurangabad who were currently unreachable. They provided the following contacts– PSI Radha: +91 93730 27682 (Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar Police Station), NSUP president Namgui KC Gangmei: +91 98620 77102, and NSUM president Ramachan Shimray: +91 70865 25659.
According to a PTI report, the arrested individuals were allegedly involved in stealing the data of US citizens and duping them. Police said the scam was run as a full-fledged call centre operated by Ahmedabad-based Valay Vyas, who is among those detained.
Police told reporters that the employees would call American citizens and inform them of pending tax dues, then threaten them with penalties. Their associates would pose as negotiators and instruct victims to buy digital gift cards equivalent to the supposed dues. The scammers would then use the numbers on the gift cards to siphon off the amount in USD, which was later converted into cryptocurrency.
Police added that employees were paid salaries of Rs 25,000-30,000 per month along with an incentive of Rs 3 per USD.
