All Sumi Students’ Union (SKK) commenced its 52nd Biennial General Conference on January 28 at Satoi Town, Zunheboto district, under the theme “Revitalizing Traditional Values.” The programme was graced by Minister for Roads and Bridges, G. Kaito Aye, as the chief host.
According to a press release, addressing the gathering, Aye acknowledged the remoteness of Satoi Headquarters but commended SKK for its steady progress. Emphasising collective growth, he said that advancement should not be limited to students alone but must involve the entire community moving forward together.
Highlighting the importance of education, the minister noted that while Nagaland boasts a high literacy rate, there is an urgent need to focus on quality education. He attributed the closure of several schools to the practice of proxy teaching and urged the Sumi community to commit sincerely towards improvement. Encouraging students to work hard for quality education, he said it was essential for securing a stable and successful future. Aye also announced the state government’s commitment to upgrade Khelhoshe Polytechnic, Atoizu, into a full-fledged college.
Calling upon students to serve as peacemakers among the Naga tribes, Aye cautioned against the misuse of technology, warning that it could derail promising careers if not used judiciously.
He advocated responsible use of technology and collective contributions for the progress of the Sumi community. The minister further urged students to take the lead in initiating electoral reforms in Nagaland, questioning the practice of compromising one’s rights for short-term gains. He challenged the gathering to bring about drastic changes in electoral politics for societal progress and encouraged disciplined living, urging participants to return home with renewed resolve to become successful leaders.
Convenor of the central organising committee, Hukiye Yepthomi, highlighted the significance of the conference and expressed concern over the declining respect for elders in Sumi society. He noted that elders, as pioneers with vast experience, deserved greater regard and called for restoring their pride by respecting one another and heeding their advice. He also advocated reforms in student elections to ensure the selection of capable leaders for the community.
The programme was chaired by Ghuvika Yepthomi, with Kitoka Sümi and Hikali Achumi serving as comperes. Greetings was delivered by president, Central Nagaland Students’ Association, Zuchobemo Jungio. The welcome address was delivered by Gaon Bura, Satoi Town Kughai Aye while the conference choir was presented by the youth choir of Sumi Baptist Church, Zunheboto.
