“Nagaland Gold CTC black tea”, the latest product under the brand “Northeast Brews” was formally launched at the Atoqa Tea Factory and Estate premises at Nikhekhu village by deputy chief minister, T.R. Zeliang on October 24.
Zeliang, who also visited the factory’s manufacturing unit, lauded the initiative and emphasised that strategic marketing was vital for the sustainability of industrial ventures. He expressed hope that such innovative agro-based enterprises would inspire other local units and contribute to strengthening the state’s economy.
The launch event was attended by advisor for Industries and Commerce Hekani Jakhalu, advisor for Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Services Kazheto Kinimi, advisor for Youth Resources and Sports S Keoshu Yimchunger, Beni M. Lamthiu MLA, and a host of other dignitaries.
Commissioned in 2021, Atoqa Tea Factory is the first licensed 5-lakh kg CTC tea unit in the region under the Tea Board of India. Situated within a 150-acre tea estate, it operates as a Bought Leaf Factory (BLF) and supports over 160 small tea farmers across 11 villages, covering approximately 800 acres of plantation along the foothills.
The factory’s specialty lies in its single-origin packed tea, cultivated at elevations ranging from 1500 to 2000 feet. Its proximity to the renowned Golaghat belt—known globally for its rich and strong liquor due to humid climate and fertile soil—adds to the unique taste profile of the product. According to the company, consumers can now enjoy a “farm-to-cup” experience within 14 days, compared to longer processing periods and blended products from other brands.
Speaking at the event, K. Awomi, General Manager (Operations), informed that the product would soon be available on retail shelves across Nagaland and other Northeast states through its marketing division. He also shared plans to promote tea tourism and destination events at the estate, including guided factory tours, tea tasting, trekking, boating, angling, tea safari tours, and educational visits.
Awomi added that the initiative aims to promote sustainable rural livelihoods and boost the local economy in collaboration with various stakeholders. He highlighted the estate’s potential as a must-visit destination in Dimapur, especially during the Hornbill Festival. The nearby Nikhekhu village, which hosts the migratory Amur Falcons during November and December, further enhances the appeal for tourists.
