The Gold Cup 50-Ball Cricket Tournament (six-a-side, tennis ball), organised by the Nepali Baptist Church (NBC), Kohima, was formally inaugurated on Thursday at the Rüzhükhrie Government Higher Secondary School Ground, Kohima.
A total of 18 teams are participating in the tournament, which seeks to promote fellowship, sportsmanship and community bonding among church youth. The event is part of the year-long Golden Jubilee celebration of NBC Kohima, scheduled to be observed from July 31 to August 2.
Youth Secretary of the Nagaland Baptist Church Council (NBCC), Rev. N. Suhuto Chishi, graced the occasion as the special guest. In his address, Rev. Chishi highlighted the role of sports ministry in fostering discipline, consistency and unity among the youth. Sharing his experience in sports development, including football D License training, he encouraged churches to actively engage young people through sporting activities.
Drawing a parallel between sports and life, Rev. Chishi remarked that life is like a fixed-overs match where every moment counts. Quoting James 4:14, he reminded participants that while a cricket ball can be changed during a game, life is given only once and carries a God-given purpose. He urged the players to remain steady, face challenges with consistency and seek God as the ultimate healer from tension and anxiety.
He further emphasised the importance of teamwork over individualism, stating that every player matters in the game of life. He likened God to an umpire who watches over all from heaven and called upon the youth to remain within God’s mercies and not be “run out” spiritually.
The opening ceremony, compered by Sanjana Limbu, began with a scripture reading and invocation by NBCK pastor Jack Thapa. The welcome address was delivered by Golden Jubilee Sports Committee Convener Narayan Bahadur, while a special musical performance by Sarmistra Pandey enthralled the gathering.
The valedictory function will be held on January 24 at 2 pm, with Gorkha Public Panchayat Kohima president Santu Thapa as the special guest.
