Nagaland: Hornbill Carnival Parade dazzles Kohima streets

The Hornbill Carnival Parade lit up Kohima on Monday night as 39 colourful troupes marched through the streets, drawing thousands of spectators to one of the most anticipated highlights of the season. The event was organised by the Kohima Village Youth Organisation (KVYO).
The parade was graced by Reuben Gauci, High Commissioner of Malta to India, and Raymond Mullen, Ambassador of Ireland, accompanied by his fiancée Pinky Jha.
Speaking at the event, High Commissioner Gauci said he was deeply honoured to be part of the celebrations, adding that the experience left a lasting impression.
“I will take back Nagaland with me,” he remarked, noting striking cultural similarities between Malta and Nagaland—particularly a strong pride in heritage. He also drew parallels between the night’s festivities and Malta’s own vibrant carnival, calling the visit especially meaningful as it coincides with the 60th anniversary of diplomatic ties between India and Malta.
KVYO president Er. Medozhazo Rutsa, in his address, welcomed the dignitaries and highlighted shared values between Nagaland and Malta—close-knit community life, emphasis on family and village responsibility, and deep-rooted Christian traditions. He said both regions have preserved their cultural identity with resilience despite their small size.
Reflecting on the parade’s theme, Unity in Rhythm, Rutsa said the celebration was not just a display of colours and creativity, but an affirmation of harmony across diverse backgrounds. “Our hearts can beat in the same rhythm when we choose harmony over division,” he said. He lauded the performers, volunteers and organisers, expressing hope that the event would strengthen friendships and unity.
The programme began with an invocation by Visato Yhoshü, pastor of UBC, before the evening unfolded into a lively spectacle of music, movement and cultural expression.
