International Day of Sign Languages was observed by Tabitha Enabling Academy in collaboration with office of the State Commissioner for Persons with Disabilities and department of Psychology Don Bosco College under the theme, “Sign up for Sign Language Rights” at Don Bosco School, Basketball Court, here on Monday.

In her address, State Commissioner for Persons with Disabilities, Diethono Nakhro, emphasized the significance of sign language in achieving accessibility and inclusion for the deaf community.

Speaking on Sign Language Day, she highlighted the vital role of sign language in bridging communication barriers for deaf and hard-of-hearing individuals.

Diethono, an alumna of Little Flower School, shared her personal connection with the event and the importance of fostering inclusion through sign language education.
She stressed that accessibility goes beyond physical structures, noting that for deaf individuals, communication remains the biggest obstacle.

Sign language, she said, was key to breaking these barriers and enabling full participation in society. She called for greater efforts to promote sign language education in schools, not only for the deaf but for the hearing population as well, to enhance mutual understanding.
Diethono also raised concerns about the shortage of trained sign language professionals in Nagaland, with only two certified interpreters in the entire state.

Encouraging students to consider careers in deaf education and sign language interpretation, Diethono said these professions not only offer employment opportunities but also contribute to breaking down societal barriers.

“Sign language connects the Deaf and hearing worlds, fostering understanding and respect. It is a bridge to equality, inclusion, and empowerment,” Diethono remarked, urging the community to “sign up for sign language rights” and build a more inclusive future.

Interpreter for the event was Catherine Thong, Moderator was Eliza Chishi
Act of Blessings was done by principal, Don Bosco Hi: Sec School, Fr. T P James SDB.
Navigating Life as a Deaf Person was shared by Amenuo Khoubve while a drama was presented by students of DBCK, department of Psychology “This is me”. Later and exhibition was also held as part of the event.
