Nagaland Jail Visiting Committee inspects Kiphire district Jail

DIMAPUR

A Jail Inspection was conducted at the District Jail, Kiphire, on October 24 by the Jail Visiting Committee comprising Neiko Akami, member secretary, Nagaland State Legal Services Authority (NSLSA), DIG (Prisons), Superintendent of Jail, Central Jail Dimapur, and Holika Sukhalu, secretary, Kiphire District Legal Services Authority (KDLSA).
During the inspection, the Committee interacted with Under-Trial Prisoners (UTPs) and convicts, and reviewed all sections of the jail premises.
Several concerns were noted, including the condition of the wards, following which the Committee recommended repair and renovation of all prisoner wards, proper electrical wiring in all sections, and installation of a European commode in the female ward.
Subsequently, a Legal Awareness Programme was organised by KDLSA within the jail premises, chaired by Ayiala Imti, Chief Legal Aid Defense Counsel (LADC). As part of the initiative, Nagaland State Cooperative Bank Ltd., Kiphire Branch, handed over a computer set to the jail authorities to facilitate vocational training for inmates.
Delivering the keynote address, Holika Sukhalu, secretary KDLSA, stressed on the importance of rehabilitation through legal awareness and vocational empowerment. Panel Lawyer Limkhushi Thongliu conducted a session on prisoners’ rights, which was well received by the 11 inmates currently lodged in the facility.
Neiko Akami, member secretary NSLSA, encouraged the inmates and explained the role of Legal Services Institutions at various levels.
He assured that the concerns raised during the inspection had been duly noted.
In his concluding remarks, Akami urged KDLSA to continue its dedicated outreach and ensure legal services reach all sections of society, especially the marginalized and underprivileged.
