Nagaland Joint Christian Forum celebrates 25th anniversary, emphasizes on unity

Correspondent

The Nagaland Joint Christian Forum (NJCF) marked its 25th anniversary with a grand celebration at the Platinum Hall, NBCC, Bayavü, Kohima, under the theme “Fostering Unity in Christ.” The event highlighted the forum’s achievements over the past two and a half decades in uniting various Christian denominations across Nagaland, making it one of the state’s most significant gatherings.

In his address, NJCF president and NBCC general secretary, Rev. Dr. Zelhou Keyho, described the anniversary as a monumental milestone. He acknowledged the challenges in organizing inter-denominational events, noting, “It is not easy to bring even 20 people together, but today, we are here in hundreds.”

Rev. Keyho expressed optimism about the forum’s future, predicting that by its 50th anniversary, the event would draw an even larger crowd. “By then, this hall will be too small to accommodate the people,” he said, envisioning a grander celebration. He emphasized the need for inclusivity, particularly by increasing women’s participation, and stressed that the future of NJCF would be shaped by both men and women working together.

In his sermon, Rev. Keyho laid out the biblical foundation for NJCF’s mission, referencing the creation story from Genesis and reminding attendees of their role as stewards of God’s creation.

He also expressed concern over the growing secularization within the church, urging congregations to resist societal pressures and to focus on spiritual unity rather than outward appearances. He warned that modern challenges, such as artificial intelligence and smartphones, are contributing to divisions within the church.

Calling for unity among Christian denominations, Rev. Keyho quoted Helen Keller: “Alone, we do so little; together, we can do so much.” He emphasized that unity in Christ would allow denominations to accomplish far more collectively than they could individually.

He also addressed internal challenges within the church, such as jealousy and division, which weaken the body of Christ, urging believers to reflect on their actions and seek true unity.

Incoming NJCF President, Rev. Dr. N. Paphino, expressed gratitude for his new role and acknowledged the contributions of the outgoing president and office bearers. He proposed appointing Rev. Dr. Zelhou Keyho and elder Khyomo Lotha as advisors to provide continued guidance for the forum.

The event featured special performances by the Sümi Aphuyemi Baptist Church Kohima, Christian Revival Church Kohima Village, and Salvation Army Kohima.
Greetings were conveyed by elder Khyomo Lotha and NJCF’s first president, Rev. Zhabu Terhüja. The program was chaired by Dr. Keneipfhenuo Rüpreo, with prayers led by Rev. Fr. Matthew Mhabemo Humtsoe and Rev. Dr. T. R. Angami.

New NJCF office bearers (2024-2029): Rev. Dr. N. Paphino (President), Rev. Dr. Vevo Phesao (Vice President), Rev. Dr. Moses Murry (Secretary), Rev. Fr. Dr. Pezalhoukho George Rino (Joint Secretary), and Dr. Khontele Seb (Finance Secretary & Treasurer).
