Kebentsin Club Sendenyu under the banner of Kebentsin Agri & Allied Cooperative Society (KAAS) Ltd celebrated its ten years successful journey of coffee farming on December 27, at Sendenyu village in Tseminyu.
Addressing the annual gathering of the Club, Dr. Thong said that the Land Resources department initially supplied 11,000 coffee saplings. In 2016, from the nursery prepared locally with support from land resources department, approximately 26,000 saplings could be planted. The nursery also supplied around 11,600 coffee saplings to other neighbouring farmers.
By 2017, the nursery could raise 70,000 coffee saplings, Dr. Thong said while sharing brief history of Kebentsin Coffee Farm. 20,000 saplings were planted in the farm this year, while the remaining saplings were distributed to 15 neighbouring farms. In 2018, the nursery raised one lakh coffee saplings, Dr. Thong said adding that Nagaland’s Chief Minister Dr. Neiphiu Rio too obtained 50,000 saplings for his coffee farm. In 2019, the nursery raised another 1, 30,000 saplings and the farm planted about 17,800 saplings.
During 2021, the farm raised 1, 40,000 saplings and registration of Kebentsin Agri & Allied Cooperative Society (KAAS) Ltd was done. The farm has supplied 1,80,000 coffee saplings, enabling 45 households to start coffee farming till date.
The year wise harvested parchment coffee stands as; 2019- 100 kgs, 2020- 300 kgs, 2021- 400 kgs, 2022- 480 kgs, 2023- 550 kgs, 2024- 650 kgs. KAAS is expecting a good harvest this year (2025).
Coffee farm, which was established in 2015, comprises 22 young families of Sendenyu village. It was formed by 25 members with an objective to promote and encourage “honest work culture” among the members and the society at large. Kebentsin Club ventured into coffee farming in 2015 through the initiative of DPO, Land Resources Department, Kohima. All the land within the farm belong to the members of the club, comprising several clans of Sendenyu village. The land was voluntarily donated by the members and presently the farm covers a compact area of around 25-26 hectare.
All labour required for the farm such as jungle clearing, pit digging, sapling plantation, nursery and seasonal maintenance works are dune by the members of the family, according to KAAS Coffee Farm advisor Dr. Gwalozii Thong.
Meanwhile, the KAAS Coffee Farm thanked the Government of Nagaland, Land Resources department and the Coffee Board of India for the constant encouragements and handholding given to them. It also thanked the department of agriculture, department of New & Renewable Energy and Department of Power for their support.
Earlier, the annual gathering was chaired by KAAS Coffee Farm secretary Njonye Thong while welcome address was delivered by KAAS Coffee Farm president Joshua Bukh. Invocation was pronounced by Thongsunyu Baptist Church, pastor Shokvulo Khing. Short speech was delivered by Thejangulie Seb.
