The chairman of Kohima Municipal Council (KMC) has tendered his resignation this week, which is currently undergoing the statutory process as per provisions of the Nagaland Municipal Act.
Confirming the development, Deputy Commissioner Kohima, Henok Buchem, informed that upon receipt of a resignation, a mandatory 15-day notice period is issued to the incumbent. Only after completion of this period is the matter forwarded to the state government, specifically the department of municipal affairs, for formal notification.
Clarifying the status, the DC stated that the resignation is not final at this stage and that acceptance rests with the state government after due procedure is followed.
It may be recalled that the deputy chairman had also submitted his resignation earlier, reportedly on health grounds. As in the present case, statutory formalities must be completed before any official vacancy is declared.
With both senior functionaries stepping down within a short span, attention has turned to administrative continuity of the council pending completion of the legal process.
