The Kuki Union Chümoukedima celebrated Chavang Kut, the post-harvest festival of the Kukis, at Chümoukedima on November 1.
In a press statement, Kuki Union Chümoukedima chairman, Lenjahao Dimngel, informed that deputy commissioner Chümoukedima, Polan John, was the special guest for the event, while L. Singsit, former DGP Prisons, was the chief host. The celebration featured cultural dances, prayers, songs by invited artistes, and speeches from dignitaries.
Addressing the gathering, Dimngel said Polan John highlighted the historic role of the Kuki community in shaping Naga history. He said the Kuki community had contributed immensely to Naga history based on their convictions and beliefs and expressed hope for “forgiveness, understanding, and healing” among communities.
He recalled that Lengjang Kuki was among the signatories of the 1929 Naga Club memorandum to the Simon Commission and noted the formation of the Kuki Tribal Council under the Naga National Council (NNC). He said Kuki leaders were instrumental in shaping the 9-Point Agreement and had actively participated in the 1951 plebiscite, adding that Seikhohen Kuki was a member of the first delegation to meet Jawaharlal Nehru for Naga independence.
John also mentioned the SeKuReng (Sema-Kuki-Rengma) alliance under the NNC’s Federal Army and recalled the involvement of Kuki leaders such as Jangkhosei Kuki, a member of the Naga People’s Convention drafting committee, and Lutjakai Kuki, a member of the Interim Body.
Following statehood, he said two Kukis- Langkam Kuki from Gaspani-II and Lalkholam Kuki from Tening- were elected to the first Nagaland Legislative Assembly, while Henlun Singson later served as MLA and minister in the late 1980s.
DC also honoured Subedar Khupjalet Kuki, the first president of the Chakroma Group (1945-48) and grandfather of Lenjahao, the current chief of Molvom village. He acknowledged the service of L.L. Doungel, former DGP Nagaland, and L. Singsit, among others, and remembered several senior Kuki officers in the state.
Expressing concern over the declining representation of Kukis in the Nagaland Public Service Commission (NPSC), he said, “Like in the old days, I hope our communities come closer together with mutual respect and acknowledgment of one another. We share not only a common history but also a common future.”
The programme was attended by NSCPCR chairman Alun Hangsing; Chümoukedima Town Council (CTC) chairman, Lhousituo Khro; deputy chairman, Moala Ao; NTUCT president, Nungsang Jamir; Sumi Union Chümoukedima president, Ghonito Achumi; Zeliangrong Union Chümoukedima president, Igalung Zeliang; Ward-9 councillor, Sekho Thakro; Notary Advocate, Seyielhoulie Keyho; and youth leaders from Chümoukedima village. Leaders from Kuki Inpi Nagaland and officers from the community also attended. The celebration concluded with thanksgiving prayers and a traditional Kut feast.
