Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK) Mokokchung conducted a one-day training program for the watsu telen/women farmers of Salulemang on November 7 on Citrus.
To boost production qualitatively and make farmers aware of the problems and tackle them scientifically, Dr. Martha Chakruno (ACTO Entomology) deliberated on biological pest management where different pests of citrus along with their damage symptoms were shown to the farmers for proper identification along with management strategies to be followed were discussed in detail.
Other management methods like painting of tree trunks with Bordeaux paste, spraying of biological agents, neem oil & installation of yellow sticky traps, pheromone traps, etc. were also discussed with hands on demonstration to the farmers.
Imtilemla (ACTO soil conservation) spoke on soil and water conservation in watershed. She highlighted the issue of soil erosion in the district due to rainfall and explained the different methods to manage and utilize runoff for useful purposes by adopting soil conservation measures.
Soil health and nutrient management which contributes significantly to citrus production was detailed along with presentation for differentiating pest and nutrient deficiency problems. She also sensitized the participants on the technology of balanced nutrient management and application technologies with respect to citrus.
Salulemang, a village renowned for its citrus cultivation for many decades, faces problems mainly due to mismanagement and absence of scientific management practices.
