Nagaland: KVK Peren celebrates Kisan Diwas with farmers

Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK), Peren, celebrated Kisan Diwas or National Farmers’ Day on December 23 to commemorate the birth anniversary of Chaudhary Charan Singh, India’s 5th Prime Minister. The programme was held at the Councillor Hall, Veterinary Colony, Jalukie Town, in the presence of 132 farmers from Peren district. The event was also telecast by the Ministry of Agriculture & Farmers Welfare.
Principal Scientist & Head, KVK Peren, Dr. K. L. Meena, explained the history and significance of Kisan Diwas. He highlighted the salient features of the Viksit Bharat Gram G scheme, which provides 125 days of guaranteed wage employment for unskilled labour with timely wage payment. He urged farmers to take advantage of such schemes for improved farming practices.
Dr. Prashant Kalal, SMS-Fruit Science, delivered a lecture on “Sustainable Farming Approaches” to increase farmers’ income. He encouraged adoption of good agricultural practices, technology-based farming integrated with animal husbandry, and the use of biofertilizers and biopesticides for chemical-free crop production.
Guest of honour, Iruga Zeliang, council member of Jalukie Town, advised farmers to utilize various agricultural schemes to enhance income and livelihood. He also applauded KVK Peren for its Krishi Choupal programme.
Farmers marked the occasion by cutting a cake, symbolizing new ambitions towards achieving the vision of Viksit Bharat 2047.
Union Minister for Agriculture & Farmers Welfare, Shivraj Singh Chouhan, along with Ministers of State Bhagirath Choudhary, addressed farmers through a live meeting, encouraging them to adopt sustainable farming technologies to realize the goals of Viksit Bharat.
Farmers also interacted with KVK scientists regarding government schemes and farming challenges. Vegetable seeds were distributed to all participants.
Kisan Diwas, celebrated under the theme “Empowering Annadata for a Prosperous Nation”, served as a timely reminder to recognize farmers’ contributions while addressing their challenges and improving their quality of life.
