Nagaland Legislative Assembly (NLA) Speaker Sharingain Longkumer, along with NLA secretary-in-charge Khruohituonuo Rio, paid a courtesy call on the Vice President of India, C.P. Radhakrishnan, on November 18 in New Delhi.
During the meeting, Sharingain apprised the Vice President of the successful conduct of the 22nd Commonwealth Parliamentary Association (CPA) India Region Zone-III Conference recently hosted in Nagaland. He also briefed him on the nine resolutions adopted at the conference, with particular emphasis on the agendas concerning Nagaland highlighted by the chief minister during the plenary session.
The Vice President, while acknowledging the briefing, said healthcare remained one of the most crucial components for progress. He appreciated and extended support to the resolutions of the House, especially the proposal for upgrading Kohima Medical College into a central institute on the lines of AIIMS or RIMS Imphal.
On November 19, the Speaker and secretary-in-charge also met Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla to update him on the successful conclusion of the conference and formally submit the resolutions passed during the plenary. They also referred to the announcement made in the Union Budget 2015-16 by the late Union Finance Minister regarding the establishment of an Indian Institute for Scientific Research in Nagaland, which had been made on the floor of the House during Birla’s tenure as Speaker.
