Nagaland Longjang wins Tug of War at P. Shilu Ao Fest

Longjang village emerged as champions of the 2nd Tug of War Championship 2025, defeating Sungratsu village in the final match held as part of the P. Shilu Ao Indigenous Games Festival, which concluded on Saturday at Longjang village. The winning team was awarded a trophy and a cash prize of Rs. 30,000.
The two-day festival, organised by the Longjang Riongjanger Cultural Society Mokokchung, featured a vibrant display of indigenous games and cultural performances. Ten neighbouring villages—Longpa, Sungratsu, Khar, Mongchen, Dibuia, Waromung, Asangma, Kilengmen, Mongsenyimti and Chuchuyimlang—along with other invitees, participated in the event.
Gracing the closing ceremony, advisor Law & Justice and Land Revenue, T.N. Mannen shared insights into the life of P. Shilu Ao. He encouraged the organisers to expand the championship into a larger platform and emphasised the role of such festivals in fostering unity and healthy competition. “We lack unity, and it is through such festivals that the spirit of healthy competition is inculcated and bigger unity forged,” he stated.
Earlier speaking as inaugural guest, advisor Water Resources, Tongpang Ozukum paid tribute to P. Shilu Ao, the first chief minister of Nagaland. He lauded Ao’s contributions to peace and governance and commended the organisers for honouring his legacy. “Today we cherish the achievements of our great leader,” he said, while urging continued efforts to promote indigenous games and cultural heritage.
A brief addresses were delivered by chairman DPDB Mokokchung, Nuklotoshi, MLA and advisor Fisheries and Aquatic Resources, A. Pangjung Jamir. Greeting message was also shared by Ao Senden president Marsanen Imsong. The festival concluded with vibrant presentations of traditional folk songs, dances, and indigenous sporting events, celebrating the rich cultural heritage of the Ao community.
