Nagaland: Major fire at Burma Camprenders hundreds homeless

Staff ReporterDIMAPUR, DEC 14 (NPN)

A massive fire broke out in the early hours of Sunday (December 14) at East Block Colony in Burma Camp.
According to reports, the blaze originated in the CGI roof and bamboo or wood structures. The raging flames quickly spread to nearby shops. In total, the fire burned down around 30-40 households that left around 300 families homeless. Fortunately, no casualties were reported.
Fire officials said they received a call at around 7 am.
A total of nine fire tenders were pressed into service- four fire tenders from Central Fire Station, three from the West Fire Station, and two from the Chümoukedima Fire Station.
Firefighters battled huge flames by directing water from hose pipes to eventually bring the blaze under control after two hours.
Sources said the cause of the fire has not been ascertained though some attributed to electrical sparks or from some kitchen.
Most of the houses across various colonies in Dimapur are densely packed. Also most of the ‘kutcha’ houses are constructed with bamboo or wood walls with tin roof, which are prone to fire. Majority of fires in Dimapur occur during dry winter months especially in slum areas.
