Nagaland Malaria cases in Dimapur show sharp drop

Staff ReporterDIMAPUR, NOV 1 (NPN)

Malaria cases in Dimapur district have dropped sharply, with only six cases reported so far as of 2024, marking a significant decline from 113 cases in 2018.
Health officials informed this Reporter, that the Annual Parasite Incidence (API) across all districts of Nagaland, including Dimapur, remains below one- an indicator of very low malaria transmission and progress toward near elimination.
Health authorities attributed the steady decline to sustained surveillance, vector control, and community-based interventions such as the use of larvivorous fish and long-lasting insecticidal nets. Mandatory reporting of suspected cases and regular monitoring have also strengthened the elimination campaign.
While Dimapur had earlier been identified as a malaria hotspot, health officials now note measurable progress as the state transitions into the elimination phase. The target is to achieve malaria elimination in all blocks by 2027 and maintain a malaria-free Nagaland by 2030.
Dimapur continues to remain under close surveillance for other vector-borne diseases such as dengue and chikungunya, transmitted by different mosquito species with distinct breeding and biting behaviors.
