DIMAPUR, DEC 12 (NPN)

Principal District & Sessions Court Kohima has on Friday convicted a man and sentenced him to 10 years of rigorous imprisonment for rape.
In an order dated December 12, 2025, the Principal District & Sessions Judge Kohima, Mezivolu T. Therieh, convicted the accused identified as one Yhunthonlo Kez (42)—a serving GB of Tesophenyu village at the time of commission of offence—under Section 376(1),354A(1)(i) and 323 of the Indian Penal Code. During the trial, nine prosecution witnesses were examined, and the trail was conducted by L. Sashimongla, special public prosecutor, Kohima on behalf of the State. Keeping in view the advanced age of the victim and the physical and mental trauma suffered, the court directed the state government to release Rs 200000 as compensation u/s 357 A CrPC. and under the victim compensation Scheme.
The court also directed that on recovery of total Rs. 11,500 as fine from the accused, victim would be paid Rs.6000 as compensation.
While convicting the accused, the court observed that the offence of rape was serious and grave and undermined the bodily integrity and dignity of the victim.
The victim, in this case, was aged about 82 years and was completely helpless at the time of incident, which was committed in the sanctity of her home.
Although the accused was a first-time offender, the mitigating circumstances did not outweigh the aggravated factors.
