Nagaland Mangmetong–Okotso meet reaffirms unity

DIMAPUR

The Mangmetong ‘A’ Khel Putu Menden and Okotso Village Council held their Triennial meet on October 30 at Senden Riju, Mangmetong, reaffirming their commitment to unity, cultural exchange, and environmental conservation.
The gathering, aimed at strengthening the age-old bond between the two villages, unanimously resolved to construct a Multi-Purpose Community Building and a Friendship Monolith at the shared boundary, symbolising mutual respect and enduring friendship.
Further resolutions included the initiation of a cultural exchange programme to foster deeper understanding between the communities, and a reaffirmation of the biodiversity conservation pledge. A ban on hunting will be implemented following consultations in both villages to ensure uniform enforcement.
The house also agreed to organize a community fishing event at Chubi/Tsudi River as a gesture of harmony and cooperation.
Advisor for Information & Public Relations and Soil & Water Conservation, Imkong L Imchen, who attended the event, remarked that the people of Okotso and Mangmetong have coexisted peacefully since time immemorial.
He described the gathering as a testament to the enduring importance of unity and harmonious cohabitation. Expressing concern over tribalism, Imchen termed it a serious social menace that fosters mistrust and division.
He called for collective resolve to rise above narrow affiliations and work towards an inclusive society, emphasizing that true development and peace can only be achieved through unity.
Reflecting on his public service career, Imchen shared that he always upheld firmness and impartiality, and stressed that meritocracy should guide all government policies and decisions. A joint meeting was later convened under the chairmanship of Mangmetong ‘A’ Khel Putu Chairman, Dr. Longri Jamir.
