Nagaland marks Environment Day with sustainability initiatives

Schools partner with ‘Act For India’ for global sustainability

In a step towards environmental sustainability, three educational institutions in Nagaland have partnered with “Act For India”, a youth-led initiative promoting eco-conscious living and plastic waste reduction.
St. Mary Higher Secondary School, Dimapur, Libemo Memorial School, Wokha and Milon School, Dimapur have committed to key SDGs and eliminating single-use plastics by adopting Act For India’s SS202 steel water bottles.
The partnership marks a significant stride as Nagaland actively participates in the global sustainability movement on World Environment Day 2025, which focuses on ecosystem restoration and climate resilience.
St. Mary Higher Secondary School, Dimapur, is taking a pioneering role in environmental responsibility by integrating zero-waste practices and plastic reduction directly into its curriculum and school culture.
Libemo Memorial School, Wokha, has embraced environmental stewardship by actively engaging both students and staff in green initiatives and comprehensive waste management programs.
Milon School, Dimapur, has already launched innovative campus-wide campaigns, including successful stainless steel bottle drives and widespread “green classroom” pledges.

Tree planting competition for World Environment Day

DIMAPUR: In celebration of World Environment Day 2025, the Nagaland University Research Scholars’ Forum (NURSF), Kohima Campus, will be organising a tree planting competition to promote environmental awareness and individual action. Participants have been invited to plant a tree, take a photo during the planting process, and record a short video explaining the plant’s name and the importance of tree plantation. Entries had to be submitted via WhatsApp to 7005498030 on June 5 or 6, 2025.
Submitted photos and videos will be published on NURSF Kohima’s official social media platforms by June 10, and winners will be announced on June 25. Selection will be based on the number of likes, shares, and views received. The competition is open to all, with no age or language barriers, encouraging everyone to take action for environmental conservation.

Plantation drive at Nagaland legislature quarters

DIMAPUR: As part of the World Environment Day 2025 celebration, staff of the Kohima Forest Division conducted a plantation drive on June 3 at the Legislature Quarters in Thizama. The initiative was led by minister of Environment, Forest & Climate Change and Village Guards, CL John.
Emphasizing this year’s World Environment Day theme, “Ending Plastic Pollution,” CL John said that collective efforts were essential for ending plastic pollution.
He also highlighted the importance of tree plantation, where everyone should cultivate the habit of planting trees whenever possible and not just make it a one-time activity.
With the aim to enhance the urban greenery of the area, the plantation drive started from the entrance and the surrounding areas of the quarters within the vicinity.

DIMAPUR: Western Sümi Students’ Union (WSSU) marked World Environment Day under the theme “Ending Plastic Pollution Globally” with a tree plantation initiative at its office on June 4.
As part of the celebration, tree saplings were distributed to WSSU’s Units and Sub-Units for planting at their respective offices, reinforcing the importance of environmental conservation. The initiative was conducted in collaboration with the Forest Department, including the Divisional Forest Officer and Assistant Conservator of Forests, Dimapur.

DIMAPUR: Kohima Forest Division has announced the winners of the Online Open Slogan Competition held under the theme “Ending Plastic Pollution Globally.”
The winners were as follows:
The first position was bagged by Leye Konyak under the topic, ““DON’T LET PLASTIC OUTLIVE US!”, second position by Javizo Metha on “Unwrap the World from the use of Plastic” and third by Khriezokhonuo on “P – Please, L – Look, A – Around, S – See, T – That, I – I’m, C – Controlled Cause I’m everywhere”
The winners have been requested to collect their cash prizes from the office of the Divisional Forest Officer, Kohima Forest Division at the Forest Office Complex, below MHBHSS, on June 10, 2025, at 12 noon with ID proof.
