The second day of the Hornbill Angling Festival 2025 was held at the Tizu River in Meluri, marked by the official launch of the Meluri District Anglers Association. The event was graced by Advisor for New & Renewable Energy (N&RE) and Nagaland State Disaster Management Authority (MSDMA), Nyusietho Nyuthe, as the special guest.
The angling competition concluded with Gagan Rai securing the first prize, followed by Siechutho in second place and B. Imnachiba in third. The winners received prize money of Rs. 1 lakh, Rs. 50,000, and Rs. 25,000 respectively, along with certificates.
In his address, the Advisor highlighted the rapid ecological changes in river ecosystems, noting that invasive fish species are increasingly dominating upstream waters and threatening native varieties. He emphasized that fishing remains both a cultural practice and a livelihood for Meluri’s river communities, making conservation a collective responsibility.
Nyuthe commended the Anglers’ Association Nagaland (AAN) for introducing angling practices to the district while promoting awareness and conservation. He expressed optimism that with the involvement of AAN, local administration, and community support, sustainable fishing measures and responsible river management could be developed. He also urged the Fisheries Department to explore practical and sustainable ways of generating economic activities through aquatic ecosystems.
A key highlight of the programme was the launch of the Meluri District Anglers Association, envisioned to conserve aquatic biodiversity, promote sustainable angling and boost eco-tourism. The event also saw the release of a magazine documenting AAN’s activities from 2013 to 2025.
The programme was chaired by joint director, Department of Fisheries & Aquatic Resources (AR), Y. Kent. Short speeches were delivered by director, Department of Fisheries & AR, Ronsennnungba, and president of AAN, Mhonbemo Ngullie, while the vote of thanks was offered by District Fishery Officer (DFO), Meluri, R. Esther Angami.
The Hornbill Angling Festival continues to serve as a platform for promoting conservation, sustainable angling and community engagement in Nagaland’s river ecosystems.
