Missionshire Cricket Club (MCC), among the oldest cricket clubs in Nagaland, celebrated its silver jubilee on Saturday evening, November 22, at 2K Hotel, Kohima.
Extending greetings on the occasion, Kohima District Cricket Association (KDCA) president, Mengü Sakhrie, congratulated MCC for reaching the milestone and acknowledged its contribution to the promotion of cricket in the state. He highlighted challenges in developing a cricket stadium in Kohima due to weather and other constraints, but informed that a proposal for an indoor stadium has been submitted to the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). Stressing the importance of grassroots training, Sakhrie urged MCC to continue supporting efforts to nurture young talent.
Over the years, MCC has established cricket practice nets at eight locations in Kohima, including Kohima Orphanage and Destitute Home, Jakhama Village, TM Government Higher Secondary School, Kohima Science College (Autonomous) Jotsoma, Dapfütsumia Khel, St. Joseph’s College (Autonomous) Jakhama, G. Rio, Rüzhükhrie Government Higher Secondary School, and Meriema Village. These facilities have encouraged youngsters to take up the sport and enabled the club’s participation in tournaments. MCC is currently competing in the ongoing Masters Super League (MSL) at Sovima Cricket Stadium, Chümoukedima district.
Believed to be among the first cricket clubs in Nagaland to complete 25 years, MCC has excelled in district-level competitions and organised several tournaments, reflecting its enduring passion for the game.
The programme began with a prayer of thanksgiving led by advisor of MCC, Vilhoubeilie Cassius Solo, who recalled the club’s founding in 2000 and its mission to promote cricket through tournaments and grassroots activities. He reflected on the sport’s global journey from its origins in England to becoming one of the most popular games worldwide.
Earlier, MCC general secretary Peteneizo Belho chaired the programme, while club president Vithatsolie Chielie delivered the welcome address. The celebration also featured a song by Khrielakuonuo Solo, a presentation by member Kezhalezo Solo, and a vote of thanks proposed by treasurer Keneilhouzo Chielie.
The event was attended by patrons, well-wishers and guests.
