Nagaland: Mokokchung forest division implements FBMP

Mokokchung Forest Division implemented the Forest and Biodiversity Management in the Himalaya, Nagaland Project (FBMP) co-financed by Federal Republic of Germany through KfW (German Development Bank) under Batch-1 villages, which included Alongkima, Khar, Mongchen, Dibuia and Waromung village.


The project aimed to promote sustainable forest and biodiversity management in Nagaland, enhance connectivity and conservation, create livelihood opportunities for dependent communities, and establish incentive mechanisms for protecting Community Conserved Areas.


A hands-on training session on “Capacity Building for Livelihood Activities” in L6 (Reduced Human Elephant Conflict through Expanding on Conservation Area) Villages was conducted on September 17, at the Student Library Hall in Khar Village, organized by FBMP, Mokokchung Division.


Participants included members from Alongkima, Dibuia, Mongchen, Waromung, and Khar (Batch-1 villages).


Delivering keynote address, Asst. Conservator of Forest Tuli, Moamongba highlighted the objective of the training which was to empower participants with skills for enhancing livelihoods and urged all stakeholders to work diligently on improving conservation area management alongside livelihood activities in the Batch-1 villages.


A technical session, covering topics like mushroom farming, agricultural pest management, eri silkworm rearing, and swine production and management was also conducted.


Led by ACTO (Plant Protection) KVK Mokokchung, Dr. Martha Chakruno, the session emphasized use of high-quality straw for mushroom farming, effective packaging, deworming techniques, and chemicals for quality production. She also introduced integrated pest management strategies.


KVK Mokokchung distributed kharif seeds and feed supplements to participants to support their agricultural activities. Extension Officer, Sericulture, Mokokchung Nokzenkerba and Sericulture Field Asst. Mokokchung, Alem, presented on successful eri silkworm rearing, emphasizing the essential plant types needed for high-quality silk production.


Veterinary Department, Mokokchung, Dr. Ketinaro conducted a session on swine production and management, covering breed selection, pig care, feeding practices, disease prevention, and housing management.


Vaccinations for dogs and cats were also provided as part of the program’s healthcare services. The event concluded with short interview with one participant from each village, sharing their experiences from the training.
