The International Day for Older Persons was celebrated under the theme, “Ageing with Dignity”, on October 1, highlighting the importance of supporting and respecting the elderly persons.
TUENSANG: Deputy Commissioner, Tuensang, Lithrongla Tongpi Rutsa, who graced the event held at Town Hall, Tuensang, said that the day was celebrated to honour the significant contribution of the elders to the society. She said being an older person does not imply weakness, but a blessing. She therefore urged the senior citizens to impart knowledge and wisdom to the younger generation with their vast experience. She also thanked the elders for constant their prayers and support, including the recently held Dr. T. Ao Trophy.
Key note address was delivered by DWO Tuensang, T. Longlang Luckpan while Dr. Tehrilila Sangtam shared on healthy aging and physiotherapy. Speech on behalf of senior citizens was shared by Rev. L. Ben Chang and a special prayer for the elderly persons was said by president TTBPU, L. Ongmang Chang. Vote of thanks was delivered by president UTELU, Imlong Soted.
On the occasion, distinguished district award was presented to Rev. L. Ben Chang and Thsangchila. A free medical camp was also organised by the department of Health & Family Welfare, Tuensang.
The programme was organised by the Department of Social Welfare, Tuensang in collaboration with United Tribal of Elders, Leaders Union (UTELU).
WOKHA: The day was observed at Dr. Motsuo Memorial District Hospital (DMMDH) Wokha.
According to Chief Medical Officer’s Office (CMO) Wokha, at the event, District Programme Officer (NCD) Wokha Dr. Aseno Rhetso, welcomed the participants and explained on the significance of the day.
She stressed on the need for more collective effort for the wellbeing of older persons. Speaking at the programme, DMMDH Wokha medical superintendent Dr. N. Mhonchan Kithan, emphasised on the importance of regular health check-up in order to prevent various diseases.
He encouraged the older persons to check their blood pressure and sugar regularly at government health centres, where the services were provided free of cost. More than 40 beneficiaries were screened for blood pressure, sugar and free medicines were distributed to them by the health workers.
LONGLENG: Department of Social Welfare, Longleng celebrated the day with EAC Longleng, Imkongnukla Ao as special guest. Imkongkukla Ao, in her speech highlighted the important role of the elders and encouraged the younger people to love and remember their elderly parents and grandparents. Sr. supervisor T. Shahnyu Phom, delivered the welcome note.
On the occasion, the department also awarded C.Kampong and Yimsha phom, for their contribution to the people and society. Short speech was also delivered by P. Elung, president Phom Senior citizens forum,where he appreciated the department for organizing the events.
Khulazu Basa: Khulazu Basa village under Phek district celebrated the day at the village community hall. Speaking on the occasion, retired Principal Director of School Education, Zaveyi Nyekha, emphasised on promoting self-care and encouraged old people to learn love and take care of their bodies. He also encouraged them to cultivate regular movement and exercise such as gardening or other manual tasks.
Chairman of senior citizen, Zühücho Rhakho delivered greetings while Meshutsu Rhakho pronounced invocation. Puduhü Rhakho led the programme.
CKS: Chüketshe Society Khezhakeno (CKS) observed the day at Village Council Hall Khezhakeno. In his speech, Joint Director, department of Agriculture, Medovilie Ladu reflected on the dignified lives of the forefathers, their struggles, and contributions to society. He urged younger generations to learn from elders, seek divine guidance, and lead exemplary lives.
In a short speech, Dr. Dietho Koza, Assistant Professor, NIMSR, Kohima, highlighted the challenges faced by the elderly and emphasized the importance of timely medical check-ups for a long and healthy life.
Earlier, the program was chaired by Savi Ladu and keynote address was delivered by general secretary CPO Chepetso Koza.
Altogether 32 out of the total 74 persons (aged 80 years and above) attended the program from both Khezhakeno and Tepfulomi villages.
DIMAPUR: Friendship Old Age home in collaboration with the Rotary Club of Dimapur and NCD, CMO Office, commemorated the day at the Home’s premises in Hill View Colony, Dimapur. Chairing the programme, Akokla Lucy, chairman of the House of Friendship Old Age Home said that the event was marked a significant step in raising awareness about the needs of the elderly and fostering a culture of respect and care for the older generation.
President of the Rotary Club of Dimapur, Rtn. MonojBhattacharjee, in his speech, highlighted the observation of the day. District Program Officer, NCD, CMO Office, Dimapur, Dr. Lhishielo, gave a brief speech on the health and well-being of the elderly. Special guest, EAC Dimapur, Litsenthung Kikon, delivered a speech emphasizing the importance of providing care and compassion to senior citizens, acknowledging their contributions to society.
