The 58th Foundation Day of Naga United Village was observed at the village local ground, Chümoukedima, on Saturday.
Delivering the keynote address, head GB Mase Vero highlighted the history of Naga United Village, recalling the struggles and challenges faced by the pioneers in establishing the settlement and transforming it into a thriving community. He noted that prior to 1967, the present site was an uninhabited dense jungle considered land belonging to the Nagas. During the tenure of the United Democratic Front (UDF) government under then chief minister Vizol, invitations were extended to various Naga tribes to occupy the vacant land.
Responding to the call, many families moved to the area, cleared the forest, began cultivation and gradually settled. However, the scattered settlements were not officially recognised. On February 21, 1967, elder representatives from different tribes convened a meeting at Batmahal Road near the Chathe River (formerly Diphu River) and resolved to establish a unified village. Leaders Vetsosa Kezo, Rakhewiisii Hiese, Ziivehii, Merise and Dhika Khiipfii proposed the name “Naga United Village,” symbolising unity among tribes.
Under capable leadership and with faith in God, the village grew steadily. From 12 households at its inception, the settlement has expanded to 712 households with a population of about 2,871. The village today comprises four khels—Phushu, Kuba, Luzho and Razho—administered by five GBs, and has six educational institutions, 12 industries and 12 places of worship.
In his greetings, Vero urged residents to uphold the founding values of unity and solidarity. He reminded villagers that the motto was not meant for division but for putting God first and working together. Quoting the forefathers, he said, “A single straight tree alone cannot make a jungle,” stressing the importance of collective effort. He called for love, cooperation and unity in society, church and family to make the village a model for others.
The programme began with a minute of silence in remembrance of pioneers. Secretary’s report was delivered by Christina. Highlights included a folk tune by Chakhesang Züve Cultural Club, choir presentation by Ao Baptist Arogo, special prayer by Rev. Chingbam Phom, and acknowledgement by the women society.
The event was chaired by Rukutolu Vise and Limanuksung Aier. Invocation was pronounced by pastor Kuhusheyi Chotso, welcome note by GB Kevisilie Venuh, vote of thanks by GB Medoi Dozo, and benediction by pastor Khehoyi Assumi. The celebration concluded with khel-wise tug of war and a community feast.
